LEXINGTON, Ky. - Dunkirk, runner-up in the 2009 Belmont Stakes, has retired to Ashford Stud, the North American division of Coolmore Stud, in Versailles, Ky. A 4-year-old Unbridled s Song colt, Dunkirk will stand for $10,000. Dunkirk finished 2 3/4 lengths behind Summer Bird in the 2009 Belmont. Earlier in the season, he had finished second to Quality Road in the Florida Derby. In his single season at the racetrack, Dunkirk won twice and finished second twice in five starts for earnings of $393,200. Todd Pletcher trained him for the partnership of Mrs. John Magnier, the wife of Coolmore s owner, and Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor. Will Farish, James Elkins, and Temple Webber Jr. bred Dunkirk from the dual Grade 1 winner Secret Status, by A. P. Indy. They sold him for $3.7 million at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale.
