Dun Drum goes from last to first in Vice Regent Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Under a patient ride from Emma-Jayne Wilson, Dun Drum rallied strongly to win the $100,000 Vice Regent Stakes on Saturday at Woodbine.
Dun Drum trailed in the seven-horse field along the inside on the backstretch as North Battleford and Victor’s Dynasty dueled through quick fractions in the one-mile inner-turf event. Dun Drum mounted a wide bid in the stretch and got home on top by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:37.55 over the firm ground.
King Causeway finished second by a neck over Lucas n’ Lori. The 4-5 favorite Ari Gold Speedwagn faded to fourth after making an early move. Seguimi, North Battleford, and Victor’s Dynasty rounded out the field of Ontario-sired 3-year-olds.
“The key, to me, was the early fractions,” Wilson said. “This course is very technical, and you don’t want to get hung wide. I wanted to get into position, to save some ground. I could tell the way he was traveling underneath me down the backside that when I pulled the trigger and went, he was going to get them. He ran them down today, as I thought he would.”
Trained by Ian Black, Dun Drum paid $13.30 to win and earned $60,000 in his second stakes victory. He is owned by Janet Black, Joan Addison, and Barbara Brown. Addison and John Carey bred the son of Bold n’ Flashy.
