Fairy Glen, who struggled to win on turf for most of the last two years in low-level stakes for fillies and mares in Britain and France, has found a home in Dubai. On Saturday, Fairy Glen won her second consecutive Group 2 race in a strangely-run Dubai Gold Cup at two miles. The Dubai Gold Cup was the longest start for Fairy Glen, who has won 5 of 11 starts. Ridden by Mickael Barzalona, Fairy Glen, who paid $22.40 in American pools, closed from a stalking position to win by a half-length over 8-1 Caballo De Mar. Fairy Glen, trained by Simon and Ed Crisford for Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, was the only filly or mare among 10 starters in the $1 million Dubai Gold Cup. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Sunway, a Group 3 stakes winner at Meydan in January, tore off to lead by more than 30 lengths midway through the race, with the other nine runners content to wait. On the turn, Sunway’s advantage began to dissipate rapidly. Caballo De Mar, winner of the Group 1 Prix du Cadran at 2 1/2 miles at Longchamp last October, took the lead, but was unable to hold off Fairy Glen, who rallied on the inside. “I think we were stretching our luck going up to two miles, but the way the race set up it worked really well for the closers,” Simon Crisford said. “She’s got a nice turn of foot, and she showed it.” Caballo De Mar finished 3 1/4 lengths in front of 7-1 Al Nayyir. Al Riffa, the 3-2 favorite, was never a factor and finished sixth by five lengths. Sunway faded to finish last. Fairy Glen is a 5-year-old French-bred mare by the Pivotal stallion Farhh. As the only mare in the Dubai Gold Cup, she carried 125 pounds compared to 129 for the males. Fairy Glen won her third consecutive race in the Dubai Gold Cup. She won the minor River Eden Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 5/8 miles on the synthetic track at Lingfield Racecourse near London last November, and her first start this year in the Group 2 Balanchine Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Meydan on Feb. 20. Simon Crisford said Fairy Glen will return to Britain and is likely to start in the Group 2 Middleton Stakes for fillies and mares at York on May 17. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
