Undefeated Thousand Words has emerged as one of the West Coast’s leading Kentucky Derby hopefuls. Meanwhile his dam, a multiple graded stakes winner herself, has landed in the hands of the connections of another unbeaten colt from this 3-year-old crop. Pomeroys Pistol was one of the highest-priced mares at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale when she sold for $475,000 to bloodstock agent Mike Ryan. He was acting on behalf of the Kindred Stables of Jeff Drown, who co-owns unbeaten Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Structor with Don Rachel. :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales “He wants to play at the upper end of the market with some quality mares,” Ryan said of Drown, who he said owns a handful of mares thus far. “She’s obviously a very good mare, a brilliant racemare, and who knows how good [Thousand Words] is. She is a mare, hopefully, we can breed a couple of good ones out of.” Pomeroys Pistol won the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes, Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Stakes, Grade 3 Sugar Swirl Stakes, and the Just Smashing Stakes during a productive 3-year-old campaign. She placed in four graded stakes that season, including runner-up efforts in the Prioress and the Test Stakes, both Grade 1 events. Pomeroys Pistol, a 12-year-old daughter of Pomeroy, is the dam of two winners from three starters to date, led by Thousand Words. A $1 million Keeneland September yearling, the colt by the late Pioneerof the Nile has won all three of his starts, including the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity and Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes last Saturday. Pomeroys Pistol was not in foal at the time of her purchase, with Ryan noting at that time that leading sire Into Mischief topped the short list of stallions being considered as a 2020 mate. “We’ve talked about a few horses, but Into Mischief is very high on the list,” Ryan said. “She’d suit him. She’s a big, scopey mare and obviously she’s a fast mare and produced a good horse. Pioneerof the Nile isn’t here anymore, so we can’t go there, but she’ll go to a top-end horse and we’ll see if we can get her in foal early.”
