Drizzy earns shot at Santa Anita Juvenile
ARCADIA, Calif. - Drizzy will have his stakes debut in the $100,000 Santa Anita Juvenile on July 2 after a smart win in his first start on Saturday.
Trained by Mike Machowsky for owner and breeder Richard Barton, Drizzy disputed the pace in a maiden race for California-bred 2-year-olds at 4 1/2 furlongs before drawing off to win by 5 1/2 lengths under jockey Joe Talamo.
“It was really impressive,” Machowsky said.
Machowsky said he was encouraged when Drizzy worked well in company with another promising 2-year-old, Shulace, on May 15. Shulace is briefly sidelined with a splint bone injury, Machowsky said.
Drizzy is by English Channel out of Grant Marty a Wish, a nine-time winner in California from 2002 to 2004 who was third in the Daisycutter Handicap for turf sprinters at Del Mar in 2003.
The Santa Anita Juvenile is the only stakes for 2-year-old males at this meeting and is run at 5 1/2 furlongs.
