DRF's Steven Crist in critical but stable condition following cardiac arrest

Steven Crist, the editor and publisher emeritus of Daily Racing Form and a modern-day titan of handicapping, was placed in a hospital Sunday in critical condition after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in Hempstead, Long Island.

Crist, 57, had the episode one day after attending the Wood Memorial card at Aqueduct. He was in critical but stable condition Monday morning.

Crist was part of a group that purchased the DRF in 1998. The group later sold the newspaper, but Crist stayed on as publisher emeritus and as a columnist.

Crist, who has been called “the king of the pick six,” is the author of several handicapping books and the autobiography “Betting on Myself.” He co-founded a competitor to DRF, the Racing Times, in the early 1990s and was a vice president of the New York Racing Association from 1994-97.
