DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Wednesday, September 1, 2021

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.
1:45 CNL 1st CHALICE MALICE (#4, 10-1) broke from the rail and didn’t have quite enough speed to get in front, leading to a demanding chasing trip facing 10 foes on the Turfway all-weather surface. Long layoff for $210K auction buy who comes back in a $40K maiden-claimer. Don’t love that move, but don’t hate it as connections seek some return on a horse only four months from turning four, who has earned only $267. Working fast at Kentucky training center for trainer sending mainly live horses this meet. – Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race
2:15 SAR 3rd DIAMOND STATUS (#4, 6-1) is by an excellent turf and debut sire in Midshipman (15% with juvenile debut runners, 14% with turf sprinters); dam is out of Grade 1 turf winner Backseat Memories; picks up Irad for a trainer who has two debut winners sprinting on turf from his last ten runners under such conditions, with an ROI over $4.00. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race
2:49 SAR 4th TASS (#2, 10-1) has sprinted twice off the layoff, most recently in a race that featured a bunched-up finish where she was caught behind horses for much of the running; has run well sprinting, but she is better going longer, and her early speed might play in this race. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race
4:29 SAR 7th SHOW ME THE HONEY (#10, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race
4:33 CNL 7th HANALEI’S HOUDINI (#5, 3-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Marcus Hersh). | Get PPs for this race
5:01 CNL 8th ISLAND TREASURE (#10, 5-1) gets blinkers and Lasix for the first time and even without improvement would be a main contender. First try beyond 1 1/8 miles, but the dam was a graded-stakes winner going 1 ½ miles. Think she comes forward enough to beat the other obvious player. – Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race
5:05 SAR 8th BUSINUSS MODEL (#5, 6-1) didn’t run poorly at all while third in his two closely-spaced route attempts at a 2yo before the layoff; took a big step forward in his 3yo debut, before facing a tough field in that last one up here over this trip; can contend here at a price if continuing his development. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race
6:53 CNL 12th (#5, 8-1) GLORIOUS WEEKEND’s switch back to turf two starts ago produced his best performance in a long time, and he managed to run second on the CNL course, despite being moved too early, running a taxing middle half-mile, and getting forced very wide at the quarter pole. If they wait longer with the horse this time, he can tag the flagging leaders in the final half-furlong for an overdue second career win. – Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race
