DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Wednesday, October 7, 2020

DRF Staff|Oct 06, 2020
Keeneland turf racing
Keeneland/Coady Photography Keeneland angered many horseplayers earlier this week when it announced an across-the-board takeout hike scheduled to start with its fall meeting.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:35 GPW 2nd Distance the question for most of these in this spot but not GRAN ETIQUETA (#3, 8-1) who turns back off series of longer races. Might mow 'em all down if getting a little help with the pace. -Mike Welsch

1:10 GPW 3rd AVOCADO TOAST (#2, 6-1) overcame a little bumping at the break to turn in game effort back on the turf and around two turns when facing same kind last out. Might ultimately stand some catching if avoiding potential early duel with Capeline. -Mike Welsch

1:17 MTH 2nd RUSSIAN ROULETTE (#6, 8-1) failed her turf test last time out and she was overmatched in her first start of the summer but this drop in class could well provide a needed wake up call, as she does have back figures that make her a threat with these; has speed but can also rate off the pace and make one run. -Kenny Peck

1:39 KEE 2nd BETTER BIZ (#4, 7-2) showed some ability last year at age 3 and returned from a 13-month layoff at Lone Star with a game win over Amazing Ride, who came back to win a Remington Park MSW by more than nine lengths. Won't hold the dull Kentucky Downs performance against her, a race that, along with a trainer lesser known in Kentucky, helps this filly's price. -Marcus Hersh

1:43 MTH 3rd MOON UNIT ZAPPER (#8, 6-1) was behind Dreamer's Getaway last time but may have been moving better than that rival in the late stages of that race despite being saddled with a wide post and then racing well off the slow early pace; she didn't break all that well in her turf debut two back but she has license to take a big step forward with a clean trip and an improved pace scenario. -Kenny Peck

1:44 GPW 4th DISTORTED LIMITS (#3, 6-1) a $400K yearling purchase by above average debut sire Distroted Humor and a half to G1 placed Off Topic. Has been preparing for debut for quite some time without missing much of a beat at Palm Meadows. Might just prove too classy for this bunch. -Mike Welsch

2:50 GPW 6th Searching for a new face with the experienced and logical ones both non-winning and hanging sorts to date. KHOSEA (#5, 6-1) by above averagae debut sire Khozan and with a couple of strong works on resume' a week apart at Gulfstream. -Mike Welsch

3:01 MTH 6th SPIN CYCLE (#2, 4-1) may well be able to shake loose in the opening stages today, as there is just not all that much early pace signed on; he was off the pace last time and weakened after making a mid-race run at the leaders and he was in against better two back, when also against a race flow that favored the closers. -Kenny Peck

3:18 KEE 5th Love MUD PIE (#2, 9-2) in this 1 1/2-mile N1X turf contest. Horse exhibited dirt talent early but the move up on switch to turf (KEE turf) was the signal that grass was what he wanted and needed. Likely the easiest winner of the entire Kentucky Downs meeting when demonstrating that this 12-furlong trip lies well within his scope. Seems likely to continue along the same trajectory. -Marcus Hersh

3:27 MTH 7th WATCHIN THE WHEELS (#2, 2-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck).

4:57 KEE 8th VEDDER (#2, 4-1) has shown he can work fast on dirt, but he's never gotten to race on dirt until now. Just tired late in the turf route long-layoff comeback last time that could have him set for a winning performance. Expect tactical speed and he showed last year he's willing to pass. -Marcus Hersh
