DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, September 28, 2023

DRF Staff|Sep 27, 2023
American Mandate (2) finishes second in a December 2018 maiden race at Aqueduct
Joe Labozzetta/NYRA First post for Belmont at the Big A racing is scheduled for 1:05p.m. ET on Thursday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

3:10 BAQ 5th LIVE TO RIDE (#2, 10-1) is by top turf influence Kingman (27% with first-time starters, 25% with turf routers in North America); dam was a debut winner as a 2yo in France, and she has dropped two first-out winners already, including multiple Group 1-placed filly Wind Chimes; McPeek underrated with juvenile first-time starters going long. -Mike Beer

4:14 BAQ 7th ENFUEGA (#5, 5-1) went for $180k as a yearling and appears set to debut here following a series of progressive breezes through the summer for Englehart, who excels with first-time starters; dams first two foals weren't much but this is a solid Ned Evans female family (second dam is a sister to four graded stakes winners, including Grade 1 winner Prenup). -Mike Beer

5:53 BAQ 10th BOLT D'PLATA (#6, 5-1) was very green on debut when rained off the turf going short; got on this surface last time going longer but still looked unfocused in that race, though he was racing on with late interest; willing to give him one more as he takes the blinkers off for the third start. -Mike Beer

7:40 WO 5th Belmont shipper BIG WICKS (#3, 6-1) is making his first turf start off an extended layoff and is strongly bred for the grass on the dam's side. The expensive son of Medaglia d'Oro has a number of improvement angles going for him, including first-time gelding, blinkers and Lasix. -Ron Gierkink

8:07 RP 1st DRIFTING WEST (#6, 9-2) could be sitting on a peak effort in the third start of his form cycle. -Mary Rampellini

9:31 RP 4th MYLITTLEWISKEYGIRL (#10, 8-1) is well-versed at two turns on turf and has reason to move forward in her second start since July. -Mary Rampellini

9:59 RP 5th NORTHWIND (#4, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mary Rampellini).
