DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026

Sep 09, 2026
Churchill Downs.Spires.Scenic.4-29-26.BL
Barbara D. Livingston The September meet at Churchill Downs begins Thursday with an eight-race program.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

4:12 WO 3rd WHERE'S SAMNBAILEY (#7, 12-1) could prevail following a break for a trainer who routinely sends out longshot wake-up winners. Hoyte teamed up to win the Algoma Stakes for these connections with unbeaten Brandy and Me the other day. - Ron Gierkink | Get Past Performances for this race

4:42 WO 4th WILD RED (#4, 8-1) beat $15K non-two types in her penultimate race before a stalking second most recently vs. $15K non-three rivals, also on the Tapeta. She's moving up off the claim by a trainer who's had a productive meet and was second in her lone turf start last year to a peaking next-out winner. - Ron Gierkink | Get Past Performances for this race

5:00 CD 1st Didn't realize until recently just how many of trainer E Kenneally's young horses either RNA'd at a sale or were withdrawn from one. Trains for some breeders who mainly sell but will keep a horse to race if need be - a horse like STIRRUP (#9, 6-1), withdrawn from KEESEP yearling sale 2025. No work video but nothing at all wrong with the pattern and could go a little overlooked. - Marcus Hersh | Get Past Performances for this race

6:17 WO 7th PRETTY LIZA (#1, 3-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink). | Get Past Performances for this race

6:30 CD 4th No work video for debuting HONEST TRUTH (#10, 6-1) since he went straight to Ellis to start breezing and has trained there into his first start. Good times, FWIW, and long, solid pattern. Outside draw a plus, and morning-line, at least, expect he won't draw a lot of betting - but he might. - Marcus Hersh | Get Past Performances for this race

6:40 CBY 2nd BOLT OF LUCK (#5, 12-1) is by a 11% debut turf sire. His dam went 6-2-0-1 and earned 18K on the green (won turf debut). This is her first grass foal. Everyone will concentrate on the two horses that were DQ'd last out so this guy might get lost on the tote. A better start will help but more so the added distance. - Scott Ehlers | Get Past Performances for this race

6:59 CD 5th You see the 8-87 record this year from trainer A Shorter and you would not realize the very surprising success he's had on a tough circuit the last few months. The barn's surge, which is surprising given the long-term returns, kind of matches association with the ownership that claimed MCSNIPER (#2, 6-1) out of her last start. The horse has contending form in any case, and should outrun her odds. - Marcus Hersh | Get Past Performances for this race

7:40 CBY 4th SHAKE UP (#3, 4-1) just ran better and now drops in class all for a high percentage barn. This guy won his only turf start here. Weight break helps tactical speed and this horse figures as good a trip as anyone. - Scott Ehlers | Get Past Performances for this race

7:57 CD 7th Will give FIRST RESORT (#9, 6-1) one more chance to get back to the pre-long-layoff form. Good enough turf-sprint comeback run two back, and noticed a lot of horses struggling over the Ellis surface this summer - maybe he was one of them. G2 winner over the CD main track. - Marcus Hersh | Get Past Performances for this race

7:58 RP 2nd SEND OFF (#2, 8-1) figures to get a splendid set up in this sprint, which is loaded with pace; he has won at this distance and his best career Beyer came at seven furlongs and he has license to run to it if the race flow develops as expected. - Kenny Peck | Get Past Performances for this race

8:10 CBY 5th TRUE MYTH (#1, 6-1) only gets an average pace to chase but does get to save all the early ground. We like how this horse out ran her odds in her last four starts with three of those at double digits. Team Padilla have a flat bet profit on the grass. - Scott Ehlers | Get Past Performances for this race

10:46 RP 8th SHELLEY'S SECRET (#6, 6-1) improved greatly in his first start off the long break with the addition of Lasix, and while that bottom-level maiden claimer featured a field of unknown quality he did overcome a slow start and he won handily, with a Beyer that makes him a threat here; can improve upon that figure given an alert break. - Kenny Peck | Get Past Performances for this race
