DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, October 15, 2020

DRF Staff|Oct 14, 2020
Racing at Keeneland Racecourse in October 2019
Coady Photography July racing at Keeneland would include the Blue Grass Stakes and Ashland, prep races for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:10 GPW 3rd FREE TO FLY (#2, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Welsch).

1:38 LRL 3rd SOULMATE (#12, 8-1) might be up against it a bit from a class perspective, but he looked good overcoming some trouble to win an entry-level allowance at Penn National last time out. He ran right up onto heels while in contention in between rivals on the second turn and lost some momentum, but quickly righted the ship, weaved his way through traffic and was getting away at the end. Needs to find the right trip from tough outside post. -Dan Illman

1:44 GPW 4th AWESOME BEACH (#9, 3-1) gets tepid call making turf bow. Full for previous grass winner Awesome Park and with the speed to lead these merry chase if loose on front end. -Mike Welsch

2:39 LRL 5th MET IN MIAMI (#10, 6-1) is by a hot first-crop sire (Upstart is 6 for 33 with debut runners) out of an unraced half-sister to four blacktype earners including Grade 3-winning turf sprinter Sharp Sensation. Working steadily since early August at Fair Hill for Graham Motion, the sire should impart some dirt ability to this mostly turf family. -Dan Illman

3:23 WO 3rd EXECUTIVE GIANT (#1, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink).

3:24 GPW 7th PRINCE JAMES (#1, 5-1) caught a buzzsaw last time in Like You who freaked to a career best 88 Beyer Speed Figure. Has been gelded since that try and likely not catching that kind wheeling back under similar conditions today. Already proven commodity around two turns. -Mike Welsch

3:45 LRL 7th STICKINGTOGETHER (#6, 6-1) was stakes-placed sprinting on dirt last year behind the talented Hello Beautiful and appears to be racing herself back into shape as she makes her third start of 2020. Certainly has turf pedigree as a half-sister to Grade 3-placed turf router Who's Cozy and multiple stakes-winning turf router Giant Run. Dam beat males in the Grade 3 Jersey Derby going long on turf. October 3 workout matches up with the barn's Good Life Cider (beat restricted allowance horses on turf here Saturday afternoon with a 74 Beyer). -Dan Illman

3:51 KEE 6th CRYSTAL LAKE (#1, 8-1) was overmatched in the G1 First Lady at a distance longer than she wants, but that race could have her set up to win this turf-sprint allowance. She remains relatively unexposed in short grass races and probably will be a fair price. -Marcus Hersh

3:56 WO 4th RED BO (#9, 10-1) is cheapening up to the basement in this $5K seller following a series of lackluster performances against much tougher. The closer could end a long drought with Wilson taking over for Tharrenos, a successful combo. -Ron Gierkink

4:24 KEE 7th DON BOURBON (#1, 9-2) returned from a break of several months an apparently improved horse, but on a gentle incline, not a steep slope, and might be coming up to his best now third start after a layoff. On pedigree, running style, and past performance, the 9 1/2 furlongs on dirt should be right in his wheelhouse. -Marcus Hersh

4:57 KEE 8th ZIYAD is a DRF Best Bet (Marcus Hersh).

11:23 RP 8th THATSALOTOFBLING (#2, 5-1) has racing experience on her rivals and was fourth last out in a key race, with the runner-up and sixth-place finisher both returning to win maiden races at Remington Park. -Mary Rampellini

11:51 RP 9th CARLEA'S DREAM (#10, 5-1) looks like the controlling speed against these and also owns the field's best last-race Beyer Speed Figure. -Mary Rampellini
