DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, October 14, 2021

DRF Staff|Oct 13, 2021
Sound Machine wins the 2021 Musical Romance Stakes at Gulfstream Park
Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos Musical Romance winner Sound Machine will likely be singled on many Rainbow 6 tickets in race 11, the Sheer Drama Stakes.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:14 LRL 2nd ENGLISH CHARMER (#5, 7-2) finished second in her first try with winners at this level and the 59 Beyer she received is the best last-race figure in the field. She is trending in the right direction and could be tough to handle if she continues her progress. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:41 BEL 3rd ONE WHIRLWIND RIDE (#1, 5-1) is just 1 for 14 on the way into this race but he has run some nice races in NY without winning and had a big excuse when dropped to this level last time and breaking poorly to wind up last, after which he tried a long run to no avail; better than he looks and should be a fair price in here. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:55 WO 3rd WHO SAYS (#1, 10-1) has worked nicely on the Tapeta since a lackluster performance in an Aug. 22 mile race on the inner turf. Seven-eighths on the Tapeta might be an appropriate trip for the well-bred daughter of Quality Road, who should be a square price. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:58 GP 3rd UNION GAP (#4, 5-1) was re-claimed by this barn for same tag last time off troubled outing and looks like one of the few late runners in a race that should feature a very swift and honest pace. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:30 GP 4th GRRR (#1, 9-2) the most lightly raced of these conditioned claimers and coming off a decent outing making turf bow last time beating half the field despite wide trip. May offer some value if able to handle the switch to synthetic. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:36 KEE 4th GLASSATO (#1, 12-1) did nothing in his career debut a couple months ago but that was a turf MSW and he's getting a career reset in a dirt maiden-claimer. Work pattern looks okay and I'm looking at three longer-priced horse to try and beat Lemonadeatthelatch, who looks like a vulnerable short price to me. The other two, like Glassato, are second-time starters with a chance to be better than they look. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:43 BEL 5th STEELERSFANFORLIFE (#1, 20-1) wound up just 1 for 6 last year but he ran much better than the overall record suggests and the lone win did come in his only start over this course and distance; facing tougher here, but only by degrees, and he has the right running style for this race. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:02 GP 5th RESTOFTHESTORY (#3, 5-1) back to dirt and allowance company off failed turf experiement while also getting back on Lasix today. Stakes laced filly taken to run down the leaders at her best. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:15 BEL 6th EXACT CHANGE (#4, 10-1) debuted for a tag on turf and rallied through some traffic to just miss 3rd at a big price; was no match when moved up in class last time and showing improved early speed; drops back down with some dirt pedigree for Martin, who sports some interesting numbers with horses like this - turf to dirt, sprint, maiden claiming, Belmont: 3 wins and 3 seconds from his last 16 starts, $6.45 ROI. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:26 LRL 6th LITTLE BIT OF THAT (#7, 5-1) drops for her second start and she was up against it breaking from the outside post going a mile on turf in her debut. She ran a lot better than it looks on paper as she appeared to be full of run early but was under a hold as they were walking up front. She made a strong middle-move, but wasn't going to catch the leaders who controlled the race start to finish. Her lone sib is a 3-time sprint winner, albeit on turf, so this could be what she really wants to do. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:40 KEE 6th ALL CHOKED UP (#5, 8-1) fetched $225K at a 2yo-in-training sale earlier this year and has been prepping for his career debut for several months at Arlington. Take it as a good sign, given the purse structure there, that connections didn't run the horse at AP, and trainer Jim DiVito does very well with 2yo first-time starters. He might have tipped his hand with the Oct. 9 CD dirt drill but still should be a fair price. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:58 LRL 7th HE'S A SHOOTER (#9, 4-1) improved dramatically in his last two and liked the way he won his latest. He was sent hard from the rail, seemed comfortable when Gonzalez asked him to wait until he moved him to the two-path to collar the speed, and then drew off to win for fun. He was running over a muddy surface, but he also romped in his previous race on a fast track. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:05 WO 7th LOOKINATAMIRACLE (#6, 8-1) comes off back-to-back fourths vs. second-level optional-claiming company, most recently in a tough 11-horse field on the main turf. The closer could be along in time in this wide open $40K claimer in the third start of his form cycle. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:08 GP 7th BIG THORN (#6, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Welsch). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:12 KEE 7th DIBBLE DIBBLE (#6, 20-1) quietly had a solid career debut sprinting at Kentucky Downs and the quick stretch to 9.5 furlongs tells me that connections had a route race in mind when they sprinted her. $9K auction buy worked back twice at KEE, her home track, and while its hard to guess at her quality, the price should be right to find out. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:44 KEE 8th MILLIKEN (#5, 9-2) did get through along the rail, a lovely trip, but was very impressive winning at Ellis. Hand urging but appeared to have plenty left in the tank in his belated career debut. Posted a 1:11 six-furlong work time on Oct. 1, fast by any standards and especially for the Wilkes barn. Dam already has produced McCraken and Four Graces, graded stakes winners, and the good turf horse. Bondurant. In this tough field he might actually be fair value. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:52 BEL 9th GOTANDA (#12, 8-1) a firster with pedigree debuting in a suspect field with Lasix on, though he is going to have to overcome the outside post. Sire Courageous Cat does not have strong numbers with his first time starters, but he wins with 12% of his turf sprint starters, and this gelding is the first foal from Miz Owell, who was a five-time winner on turf in her career; Sharp 8 for his last 55 debuting in turf sprints (15%, $2.74 ROI). -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:31 RP 4th SILVER AND ACES (#7, 12-1) should be sharp for the move back to to turns off the sprint start. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

10:55 RP 7th ONE SON OF A CHIEF (#2, 8-1) is back in the straight claiming ranks and exits a race that went in good time. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
