DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, October 13, 2022

DRF Staff|Oct 12, 2022
Keeneland April 9 2022
Coady Photography Keeneland opens Friday and runs through Oct. 29. The track will then reopen to host the Breeders' Cup on Nov. 4-5.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:00 KEE 1st Thinking BLESS THE KITTEN (#2, 4-1) can pop the gate and cross over in front of possible pace rival Midnight J J, putting the latter in a tough spot and possibly controlling the pace from there. Has run well enough in her two KEE starts and gotten a nice little freshening (Sept. 2 last start) into this. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

1:14 Lrl 2nd KLAYTON'S KANDY (#6, 5-1) was outsprinted cutting all the way back to five-eighths, saved ground, and gave an even finish behind a gate-to-wire winner. Think that distance was a bit sharp, and she should appreciate stretching out with the longer stretch. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

1:48 LRL 3rd LUCIDITY (#6, 8-1) broke outward a bit, sat a loose stalking trip behind a fast pace, advanced three wide, and splashed away from maidens over a sloppy track. She has a good amount still to prove stepping up in class after that win, but think she might get another good pace to attack. McMahon barn has won with three of their last seven starters. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

2:12 BAQ 4th CONVERTIBLE FREEZE (#4, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race

2:54 LRL 5th I'M NOT A BABY (#1, 5-1) adds Lasix after making debut at a demanding mile distance. Broke a beat slow, raced in between horses behind a fast opening quarter, dropped inside on the second turn and finished evenly despite swapping leads a couple of times in the stretch. The fourth-finisher returned to win for $24,000 here with a 64 Beyer. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

3:08 KEE 5th COUSIN LARRY (#3, 9-2) comes out of one-turn miles but scored his last win at this same two-turn trip with the kind of trip -- stalk and pounce - he can get again here with a decent break. Worked twice since a solid run Sept. 17, a good sign. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

3:40 KEE 6th PEACEFUL MOMENT (#3, 10-1) broke poorly and took some bumping leaving from an inside post in a 12-horse restricted MSW, his lone start. Shows a $20K purchase price and is tagged for $50K here. Looks like a classic McPeek second-start improver. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

4:54 BAQ 9th MERCHANTS OF COOL (#1, 30-1) ran well in all three starts over the all-weather surface as an early 3yo in Kentucky, including that Animal Kingdom, where he failed to break sharply from the gate and was forced to make an early, wide run to contention behind Bango (now a multiple stakes winner on dirt); hasn't proven to be quite as good on dirt, but he did show some talent early on and he faced much better horses in the lone turf start; blinkers back on for a capable trainer and he will be a price. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

6:58 WO 5th PIPESTONE (#6, 10-1) took the overland route last time en route to a three-length loss vs. $25K NW3 opposition on the main turf. She was previously competitive in the lower NW3 ranks on the Tapeta and could find the mark in her second try off a $7K claim. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

8:25 WO 8th BAYSVILLE (#2, 8-1) is continuing her slide down the value ladder to the bottom maiden class. She could put it all together under a new jock on the local scene, Jose Campos, who's among the leading riders in Mexico. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

8:35 RP 2nd SHIRLEY'S TEMPLE (#6, 5-1) has run some strong races this season and defeated an eventual Remington stakes winner in June at Lone Star Park. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

10:27 RP 6th KIMBELL'S STRATEGY (#1, 6-1) was beaten just a length for everything last time when cutting back to one turn and now is back at the mile trip of her maiden win. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

11:23 RP 8th NATE'S WAY (#1, 8-1) has speed and the rail and owns the field's best last-race Beyer Speed Figure. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race
