DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, October 12, 2023

DRF Staff|Oct 11, 2023
American Mandate (2) finishes second in a December 2018 maiden race at Aqueduct
Joe Labozzetta/NYRA First post for Belmont at the Big A racing is scheduled for 12:35 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:35 BAQ 1st SHE IS ALL BUSINES (#12, 6-1) is a half-sister to three stakes winners on the grass, and a full-sister to Lachaise, who won her turf, route debut before placing in a Grade 2 last year; looked like she might have needed that debut when getting away last and then racing on gamely in the stretch; tough post but forward to go. -Mike Beer

12:56 LRL 2nd BOWIE TWO STEP (#6, 6-1) got back on track with two-turn sprint victory at Timonium. Battled inside two others for early command, shook loose entering the final bend, and scored in driving fashion. This is obviously a tougher spot, but he has enough speed to find a stalking position in the early stages. -Dan Illman

2:04 KEE 3rd MISS TAPPY TONE (#6, 6-1) came from 10 lengths behind a zippy pace to win her career debut at Fair Grounds in Feb. and there's no such speed signed on here. This is also an N2L claimer, and one suspects the filly fits the spot well, poor setup or not. Trainer C Hartman during 2022-023 is 5-3-1-0 with dirt sprinters coming off a 120-250 day layoff in a claiming race. -Marcus Hersh

2:29 LRL 5th Thought REEL WELL (#8, 6-1) ran better than it looks against a good group of state-sire allowance horses three back. Settled far back along the inside behind a solid pace, moved to the three path on the backstretch, then finished evenly without threatening. The third-finisher from that race returned to place in a similar spot with an 82 Beyer. -Dan Illman

3:00 LRL 6TH MISTER AGENT (#2, 12-1) is a full brother to two six-figure earners by a sire that went 6 for 33 (18%) with juvenile debut runners. The dam won 11 races, including one over this course and distance at two, and she is a full to stakes-placed dirt miler Wowwhatabrat (74 turf Beyer top). Barn sent out 2-year-old debut winner Noble Prendergast (also by Blofeld out of a Louis Quatorze mare) going a mile in a maiden claimer here last fall (6-1 odds). -Dan Illman

3:40 KEE 6th Will guess RUNGIUS (#6, 12-1) over CARMICHAEL between the two of them, a horse that goes way up in claiming price after earning a competitive figure in his last race and come back with a bullet half-mile drill for new connections. -Marcus Hersh

3:50 BAQ 7th FROM HELLO (#1, 10-1) has been rained off three times already this meet; has improved on turf despite failing to post a win on the surface to this point, with trips not really working out in any of her last three starts; would like to see her get forward this time from the rail. -Mike Beer

4:44 KEE 8th MAGICAL LUTE (#2, 10-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Marcus Hersh).

4:54 BAQ 9th EGYPTIAN QUEST (#11, 8-1) faced experienced, open MSW rivals in his summer debut and just looked a little green in that race while running in some spots at a price; can build on that debut experience and looks like a better fit vs. this group as he returns from a short break as a new gelding. -Mike Beer

5:10 WO 2nd WONT FORGET YOU (#7, 12-1) lacked room on the turn and was steadied before closing belatedly for third in his improved last race going seven-eighths. The son of Paynter is bred to go long on both sides of his pedigree and figures to find his calling around two turns. -Ron Gierkink

5:16 KEE 9th You know SAFE TRIP HOME (#5, 15-1) can win without a prep comeback start since he aced his career debut, beating a decent horse, Miranda Rights, by a couple lengths. Takes a horse with some ability to come right back and run as well as he did against other winners, and the pedigree obviously is there for grass. -Marcus Hersh

6:10 WO 4th DERZKII (#2, 8-1) pressed the pace along the inside before fading late to fourth when bet down to 4-5 in a recent bottom-level conditioned claimer. In the third start of his form cycle, he should be dangerous in this tougher inner turf route with a less-aggressive approach. -Ron Gierkink

7:10 WO 6th SWIRLING DANCER (#6, 6-1) prevailed in a front-end battle before fading to third ahead of two next-out winners when dropping to this $25K NW3 level on the main turf Aug. 5. She's worked thrice since and could break through with the bug AV retaining the mount. -Ron Gierkink

8:10 WO 8th GENTLE SEAS (#10, 12-1) went four-wide on the turn and wider in the lane when a non-threatening fifth over a track that favored front-runners and stalkers three weeks ago. Bynoe retains the mount and the talented bug won a race on a closer last Thursday. -Ron Gierkink

9:31 RP 4th WORDS OF WISDOM (#7, 5-1) is something of a fresh horse as this marks his first out since August. He's also appealing for the fact that he has speed, he's well-versed at two turns, and he's seen steeper. -Mary Rampellini

10:55 RP 7th ERNIE BANKER (#4, 9-2) moves back to seven-eighths for the first time in a while and he put up his best career Beyer Speed Figure at the distance. The race came at Sam Houston and now he's back at Remington, where he's 4-for-7 over the local main track. -Mary Rampellini

11:23 RP 8th TIZ MAGIC (#6, 5-1) is the one to beat off her dominant win at this distance last out at Remington. She's fired some strong races on turf, among her efforts a runner-up finish to Cogburn in a Lone Star Park stakes against males. Cogburn would go on to win a graded stakes at Saratoga. -Mary Rampellini

11:51 RP 9th SINGSATIONAL (#5, 9-2) brings good two-turn experience to the table as she's raced at this mile distance twice, once on dirt and the other on turf. -Mary Rampellini
