DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, October 1, 2020

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.
1:46 PIM 3rd GIRLS LOVE ME (#8, 7-2) seemed to run in spots when third going a one-turn mile last month. Up close to the pace in the early stages, he dropped back a bit entering the turn while in between rivals only to re-rally a bit for a minor award. Beyer Speed Figures on fast tracks are consistently competitive and he figures to be clear of traffic breaking from the far outside post. Corujo lands here instead of Mystic Times. -Dan Illman
2:15 WO 1st MERINO WOOL (#5, 3-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink).

2:30 BEL 4th THE J Y (#2, 9-2) ran well off the layoff when sitting behind a rated pace, then got in too tough in the Lubash at Saratoga; tactical runner projects for a good trip here as he returns to the Widener course over which he has posted all four career wins on grass. -Mike Beer
2:48 WO 2nd REDHAIR N FRECKLES (#7, 8-1) missed the break and was steadied into the turn before closing wide for third at first asking in a five-furlong tilt for $5K maidens. The 5yo should be a good fit in this inflated $15K maiden claimer if she improves on her debut. -Ron Gierkink
3:05 BEL 5th RELEASETHETHUNDER (#2, 4-1) won only once last year as 3yo but he consistently earned solid figures while putting his fine tactical speed to use, and was placed in a pair of stakes along the way; won easily when dropped in class for the first time at Saratoga and he did not have a comfortable trip at all when away last from the rail most recently. -Mike Beer
3:39 BEL 6th COLLOQUIST (#2B, 6-1) returned to turf to make his first start for this trainer and tired while facing a much better field going long; turned back to sprint last time and gave game chase to a dominant front-running winner en route to a mew top figure; good spot with more upside than most. -Mike Beer

4:31 PIM 8th TRACY ANN'S LEGACY (#6, 15-1) roasted a pace foe in most recent turf start before drawing away to beat those mid-level Monmouth claimers as an odds-on shot should. She earned a very competitive Beyer Speed Figure in that race and displayed that she's still in form with an open-lengths off-the-turf victory in most recent start. There are some pace and class questions she must address as she faces stakes company for the first time while likely to chase quicker splits than usual. -Dan Illman
5:04 PIM 9th BLACKBERRY WINE (#4, 15-1) fought tooth and nail with Shooters Shoot all the way around the track in two-turn optional claimer at Oaklawn on April 11. That one-mile race was run in 1:36.66 and the other division that afternoon, won by Preakness-bound Pneumatic, went in 1:36.70. The race didn't come back very strong, however, as none of the seven next-out starters hit the board (best Beyer of 86). Lots of questions to answer as he turns back to a sprint for first try following injury-induced 173-day layoff, but have a feeling he'll return a fresh and more mature colt. -Dan Illman
5:20 BEL 9th COMPETITIVE CLOUD (#1, 10-1) caught wet, sealed tracks in both starts back in June over this course and he ran better than it looks in that last one while showing good speed on a fast pace, before weakening late; gets the right class drop and can be dangerous if showing that kind of speed again vs. this group. -Mike Beer
5:37 PIM 10th MY BOY PADDY (#1, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Dan Illman).
