DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Thursday, April 28, 2022

DRF Staff|Apr 27, 2022
Aug Lutes wins the 2021 Glen Cove Stakes at Belmont Park
Chelsea Durand/NYRA Aug Lutes, a three-time winner on synthetic tracks, won his turf debut in the Glen Cove (above) left time out.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:20 BEL 1st EAU CLAIRE's (#5, 8-1) lone start to date came as a 2yo over 500 days ago and she missed all of her 3yo campaign, likely with some kind of issue; that debut run was better than it may appear on paper while making a late run into a slow pace after getting bumped back to last at the start; new trainer has had some success with horses like this from a limited sample - past five years, year+ layoff, turf, route: 3 for 6, $4.13 ROI. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

1:37 GP 2nd WONTOUGHSUNOFAGUN (#4, 4-1) turned in a game debut, over-coming poor start to pass 11 rivals on route to impressive debut win on the Tapeta. Flashed improved speed while contesting wicked pace switching to turf returning from three month layoff following debut win. Wheels back quicker, returns to synthetic, could step right back on winning track in this spot. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

1:49 LRL 3rd CORAL SUMMER (#5, 8-1) must improve as she's had her share of chances at this level, but she showed a hint of life two weeks ago at Charles Town. Tracked the moderate fractions from the pocket in a race dominated throughout by the two leaders, then eased outside for a one-paced finish. She has enough speed to get close to the pace here. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

2:11 GP 3rd MOONQUEST (#5, 9-2) a 4-year-old taking on mostly younger rivals and exiting what appears a needed outing here last month. Should sit a trip off what could wind up a contested pace. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

2:26 LRL 4th MAIL CALL (#7, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Dan Illman). | Get PPs for this race

2:36 KEE 4th WORLD OF WONDER (#3, 6-1) claimed out of last race for $30K, freshened, in for $40K - that's a good start. Trainer G. Forster with most recent sample of first-claimed horses is a strong 16-3-5-3, so even when they're not winning, they're racing competitively. Similar story regarding "blinkers on" with this barn. The last two dirt races were two turns but she won her career debut, her lone dirt-sprint start. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

2:50 BEL 4th KARNAK (#9, 6-1) was first back from a long layoff last month at Gulfstream when getting out-paced going five furlongs and just keeping on evenly in the stretch once moving wide; parlayed a good trip into a maiden win prior to the layoff at Tampa; in the right kind of spot making his second start back and can pull a better trip here with a little added distance. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

3:08 KEE 5th GOLD HERITAGE (#3, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Marcus Hersh). | Get PPs for this race

3:13 GP 5th SWEET PEARL (#5, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Welsch). | Get PPs for this race

3:40 KEE 6th Looks like a salty maiden sprint and ONE TIME MO (#5, 10-1) is sure to be a big price. Bred more for turf but out of a very good broodmare who has produced No Fault of Mine, a debut sprint winner; Ready to Pounce, a second-start MSW winner at KEE; and Ready for Change, an 11 1/2-length debut sprint winner. Jock comes from Chicago to ride. Might sneakily be live. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

3:50 BEL 6th BELLA DOMENICA (#6, 5-1) broke her maiden in a slow race when switched from turf to dirt last summer, then managed only two more starts before the layoff; might have run the best race of her career off the bench last time when chasing a front-running winner gamely and almost holding for second; threat if she can run as well in this spot, with others in here to do the dirty work after a projected fast pace. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

4:02 LRL 7th MAVILUS (#4, 9-2) received a nice ride from Maclovio Enriquez, Jr. when pulling off a big upset 13 days ago. Pressed the pace along the rail, eased back off the potential pace dispute to save ground from stalking range, then re-rallied up the fence to score. Perhaps it was simply the trip that led to the career-best Beyer, but he's been consistent for most of his career and should offer a playable price. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

4:12 KEE 7th WHENTHEDAWNBREAKS's (#10, 10-1) debut win was stronger than the Beyer figure and she did not quite look like a fully formed product while still just missing a second win while facing winners for the first time. Freshened and pointed to this big-money allowance. The dam was a graded turf-stakes winner over 11 furlongs and her other foals to race have shown the same true turf-route characteristics. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race

5:24 BEL 9th SHESADANCINGQUEEN (#1, 12-1) a War Dancer half to six turf winners debuting in a field with little turf form showing; Nevin excels with turf sprinters and has scored with a few firsters under similar conditions at prices recently - past 3 years, first time starter, turf sprint: 3 for 16, 19%, $6.41 ROI. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

6:33 TUP 5th FANCY GI GI (#5, 10-1) just ran better and now ends up in a barn that is 60% off the claim, 17% sprint to route, 12% on the dirt, 14% in routes, and 16% with their claimers. Both career wins for this filly have come at today's mile distance. Race flow isn't the best but it isn't pace-less either. Expecting a nice price for this filly. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

7:05 TUP 6th EASY DOES IT (#1, 6-1) took 25 starts to break her maiden but then won for fun. We bet this mare got a taste of winning and liked it. It is obvious that two turns on the dirt is what she does best. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

8:07 TUP 8th JOE'S PASSION (#3, 10-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race

7:40 WBS (Harness) 3rd HANG ON BABY (#1, 5-2) faces similar to those that she easily handled in leg 1 of this series and she is a good bet to repeat here. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race

7:55 YR (Harness) 4th ANGELS FOLLY (#8, 9-11) finished third to the impressive Yanaba on 4/15 at the Meadowlands, and you can see the astronomical driving/training percentages Trond Smedshammer has at Yonkers so far this year. – Greg Reinhart | Get PPs for this race
