DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, September 18, 2022

DRF Staff|Sep 17, 2022
Monmouth racing, July 2020
Bill Denver/Equi-Photo Tickets to Monmouth Park for Haskell Day, July 18, cost $100 and can only be bought online.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:40 PIM 1st DAMANDA (#8, 8-1) is a half-sister to multiple stakes-winning turf router Sweet Bye and Bye (95 turf Beyer) and juvenile stakes-winning turf router Buy Land and See (92 turf Beyer) out of a half to stakes-winning turf performer Cara Marie (92 turf Beyer) and stakes-winning dirt router Abby's Angel (92 Beyer). Perhaps the distance is a bit sharp, but the reliable barn is 4 for the last 16 (25%, $3.76 ROI) with first-time starters, and they went 3-3 on turf between Aug. 26 and Sept. 7. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

1:00 BAQ 1st PHELPSY (#4, 8-1) took some money while debuting vs. a solid field at Saratoga and did some running there despite not really being around at the end; expensive yearling buy os bred to get better with experience and distance. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

1:49 GP 4th CORPORATE AFFAIR (#1, 30-1) taken to wake up at big balloons getting significant rider switch and with the speed to perhaps clear off, get brave if able to relax on front end. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

3:03 MTH 7th STANDUP (#5, 9-2) failed to last after making a mid-race move in a route last time but he's back in a sprint and down in class, and he has license to improve based on either one of those angles; he'll be looking to run them all down late but there does seem to be enough speed in the field to set him up. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

3:45 WO 6th BONGINO (#10, 10-1) was bumped repeatedly by a rival after breaking a tad slowly from the one-hole in his debut on the Tapeta before going on to finish fifth. He's by a 13% turf sire and could graduate in this seven-furlong main course sprint with Salles climbing aboard. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

4:00 LRC 2nd MY MAN BAGS (#5, 6-1) looks obvious third start back from a long layoff following an improved effort last out and returning to the track on which he won a maiden race in his debut. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race

4:17 WO 7th SELFMADE (#7, 15-1) performed well on the inner turf in the past and is dropping from $25K to this optional starter. His trainer has been a little quiet after an excellent first half of the meet, and should get back on the beam soon. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

4:31 PIM 8th TEQUILERA (#3, 8-1) pressed 25-1 shot Robin's Fantasy (finished eighth), made the lead turning into the stretch, then succumbed to the two favorites at Colonial last month. Matz barn went 7-28 (25%, $3.28 ROI) in turf routes between June 18 and Sept. 11. Expect this filly to stay close to the leaders. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

5:04 PIM 9th KARAN'S NOTION (#6, 8-1) has been racing in good form, and he tried very hard when wired by favored Youngest of Five in two-turn sprint at Timonium. Prompted that slow pace outside, seemed outpaced a bit on the final bend, but kept charging to just miss. Will have to have them nailed on tight if he is to upset the favorite, but shouldn't be too far away when the real racing begins. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

5:13 BAQ 9th BAHAMIAN CLUB (#8, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race

5:28 LAD 4th FIRST BUMP RIDGE (#9, 12-1) drops in class and gets back to the dirt which might be his better surface. What was wrong with that dirt win two back at Lone Star? The last time this guy faced restricted claimers he won by 4 as the 7/5 favorite (6 back). Hard to believe that this horse is 12-1 on the morning line. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

5:45 BAQ 10th SHADY MCGEE (#2, 10-1) went just 1 for 8 as a 3yo after arriving from England, that win coming over two-life claimers, though he held his own vs. some much tougher horses through the summer after posting that dominant victory; dropped back down in class two back and didn't get the right ride in that spot; returned to sit a nice trip en route to an easy win last time. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

5:55 WO 10th GAV'S DREAM GIRL (#3, 20-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink). | Get PPs for this race

6:25 WO 11th WILLIAM BOY (#6, 10-1) beat $6K NW2 rivals with a good 72 Beyer in a wake-up performance over the infield course at Fort Erie in his first start for Cathcart July 25. He would be competitive on a repeat in this $7.5K conditioned contest on the inner course. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

6:30 HST 4th JUVEE TOO (#6, 5-1) made a strong late move while going wide around the stretch turn in his latest and should have speed to run at here. He has been right there in all of his races at the meet, runs well fresh, and could get up in time with Balgobin picking up the mount. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race

6:49 LAD 7th MAD ADAM (#7, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race

7:05 LRC 8th Unraced in more than a year, SAVILE ROW (#3, 10-1) has trained like he can win this N1X first start back. He runs well fresh: debut winner as a 2yo, and third with a big figure in a comeback at age 3. He is now 4, a fast recent gate work over this track signals readiness. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race

8:00 HST 7th MOUNT ASGARD (#7, 6-1) will appreciate the class relief while running for a tag for the first time. No wins at the distance but he owns the best last-race Beyer Speed Figure which he received while facing older horses in the $50K CTHS Sales Stakes. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race
