DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, September 10, 2023

DRF Staff|Sep 09, 2023
Kentucky Downs racing
Coady Photography First post for Kentucky Downs racing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:10 MTH 2nd FOR SOME REASON (#6, 7-2) is the first starter out of the dam, who won once in 19 starts, but while this colt lacks pedigree power his connections make him a contender by default; training steadily toward this debut. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:27 PIM 3rd PEACH TEA (#6, 8-1) tracked three wide and in between in career debut on dirt at Parx, then rallied nicely to just miss to a front-running winner despite looking a bit green in upper stretch. He galloped out nicely after that race, and backed the performance up with another solid runner-up effort on turf (sixth-finisher returned to graduate in a Colonial special weight on turf). -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:30 KD 1st Trainer Saffie Joseph for the third year in a row is sending the right horses to Kentucky Downs, and second-time starter CASPIAN SEA (#11, 15-1) probably was just prepping for this much richer maiden race with that decent debut of the GP Tapeta. Nearly no US runners by Ulysses, who was a top 10-12 furlong horse overseas. Obviously bred for grass. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:40 MTH 3rd GET LOADED (#7, 7-2) switches from a route to a sprint and takes the blinkers off after a one-race experiment and that was a recipe for Insatiable's win for this barn a few weeks back, with that runner also capturing a turf sprint; drop in class adds to the appeal. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:58 PIM 4th Perhaps MINT GAME (#6, 9-2) is slightly more effective at Colonial, but he's won over this course, and might get some pace to attack in this nine-furlong route. Held up in last behind a slow pace in his most recent start, he eased out into the stretch and showed a willing rally. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:02 KD 2nd First-time starter SHOW ME THE CANDY (#5, 15-1) by excellent debut sire Twirling Candy and is the first foal to race from a dam who was a turf winner. Trainer J Sharp won with a first-time starter during the 2022 KD meet. Encouraging work pattern and expect her to show some pace. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:59 PIM 6th ANAHEIM (#10, 10-1) must deal with whopping 428-day benching, but this barn went 2 for the last 5 (40%, $2.88 ROI) with horses returning from one-year layoffs or greater. Switches surfaces with a strong grass pedigree as a half-brother to stakes-winning turf router My Afleet (95 turf Beyer) and Grade 3-winning turf router Real Story. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:19 GP 6th STORM BRAVE (#7, 9-2) set a pressured pace in a race like this here Aug. 13 and paid the price, tiring to 6th. Not only did he take it, he did so through fast splits. It was his first try vs. winners, too. While he has speed his big maiden win here July 7 shows he's no need-the-lead type. At least his speed can have him it from the start, either on the lead or on the stalk. -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:07 WO 7th HAYEK (#6, 6-1) is by the hot sire Cairo Prince and her unraced dam dropped two juvenile debut winners. The $60K yearling purchase worked quickly on occasion for deadly 2yo trainer Kevin Attard. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:10 MTH 8th V MART (#1, 10-1) was off slowly enough to lose any real chance in that last one, and he was outrun against better at Saratoga in his prior try; his back Beyers give him strong credibility and he has every right to improve dramatically today on the class drop. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:05 LAD 1st SHORT STACK (#3, 12-1) is by a 14% debut sire. Her dam went 16-5-4-0 and earned 197K. One of three sibs won and is a multiple winner of 135k. This 4YO makes a late debut but maybe that is why she starts off in maiden claimers. Only one listed work in August is a bit daunting. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:33 DMR 3rd Although DERECHO DANDY (#5, 6-1) lost multiple times at this N2L starter level, the gelding has earned figures that rank among the highest in the field. Claimed for $32k from a troubled third last out, he only needs clear sailing to win with a pressing/stalking trip. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:42 WO 10th FABELMAN (#, 8-1) lost all chance when he was squeezed at the break and got away slowly before finishing fifth in his 5 1/2-furlong opener. The diminutive son of Honor Code is bred to run long on both sides of his pedigree, and could make some noise at a square price in this 1 1/16-mile maiden special. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:51 KD 9th Actually didn't like MOZLZIL (#11, 30-1) debut win in an Ellis turf route maiden as much as BLUE EYED GEORGE, but trainer B Cox's 7-4-1-0 record in KD 2yo turf stakes over the last several seasons is hard to ignore. Mozlzil was professional enough first time out but still had the look of a colt who can improve in is second start. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:28 KD 10th AUSTERE (#6, 15-1) managed to get into a good spot tracking the leaders despite breaking from a wide draw in her career debut, an Ellis turf route. But then she gave up that good position past the half-mile pole when she appeared to come off the bridle and start losing ground. Looked like an also ran going into the far turn, then surged while wide and finished things off with a pretty fast final quarter mile. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:43 WO 12th PERFECT CRIME (#5, 15-1) was shuffled back to trail early last time before rallying outside from the back of the pack to finish second on the inner turf behind Ron's Gizmo, who returned to double up in the opening leg of the Woodbine Turf Endurance Series. He would be tough on a repeat on this main turf mile around one turn. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:57 LAD 5th ITELLYOUTHEFACTS (#9, 6-1) ran well going this distance only two and three back at Evangeline. He never got a breather in his most recent plus six furlongs might have been a bit short for him. He draws well for this and keeps his regular rider all for a barn that is 3 for 9 locally. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:53 LAD 7th LAKE MARIE (#2, 6-1) won when last seen on this sod and it came going this distance. She puts races together for the first time since March. She has never missed the exacta in a turf sprint. A bullet work on the 4th rounds out the appeal. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
