DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, October 8, 2023
?q=100)
Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.
1:17 LRL 2nd ONEOFTHEGOODGUYS (#4, 20-1) was outsprinted for the early lead over speed-friendly Pimlico surface, was placed on a hard chase through a swift second quarter in 22.01, then tired along the preferred inside paths behind that gate-to-wire winner. The runner-up from that race returned to place in a state-sired allowance with a 66 Beyer. Barn won three of five starts between 9/15 and 10/4. Might not have to work as hard to grab the lead here. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:32 KEE 2nd Second start, route to sprint - sounds like Rusty Arnold territory. First race this meet was a $100K maiden-claimer like this and the Arnold-trained Peek ran lights out. GATHER (#5, 8-1) did little sprinting in her debut beyond gain experience and foundation to help her race much more competitively this time over her home track. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:04 KEE 3rd Sure that trainer G Forster, who hails from the northwest, knows how stakes form there transfers to claiming classes in Kentucky better than I do, and if he thinks SLACK TIDE (#7, 8-1) fits for this $32K tag, I can easily buy that. This 6 1/2 furlong trip appears to suit here, she's worked steadily since shipping east, and the outside draw in a short field, giving her running style, looks ideal. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:12 BAQ 4th QUEENS MASTERPIECE (#3, 6-1) didn't earn much of a figure when winning on debut over this track at the end of last year, but she did some good things in that race while making a wide move to take over, before powering clear in the stretch; next two came vs. much tougher, and she failed to handle turf before the layoff. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:23 GP 4th AMBUSHED (#2, 15-1) in new hands since his last. Worked strong half over the surface in company with allowance type from Sanchez barn and has some back efforts including the near miss to Millennium Condo on 6/24 that would be good enough here. -Mike Welsch | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:16 BAQ 6th FREEDOM ROAD (#2, 8-1) matched his top 2yo Beyer when winning off the layoff this year, and he has continued to race competitively since then vs. tougher horses; drops for the first time following a short layoff and he is a new gelding for this. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:54 GP 7th STRATEGY JAK (#2, 10-1) had world of trouble, beat more than half field from tough post at second asking. Stretches out, switches to synthetic, as good as any in a wide open mix with plenty of questions to answer. -Mike Welsch | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:31 WO 7th Stretch-runner AMAZING GRACE (#2, 10-1) didn't have any pace to run at when third in both of her Saratoga starts vs. G2 opposition. The German import could make some noise as a longshot with the addition of Lasix here under Dylan Davis, who combined with Clement to win this G1 fixture with Mutamakina in 2021. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:44 KEE 8th PINOTSLILGIRL (#10, 8-1) won last out at Kentucky Downs leading over a course that was favoring speed (Get Smokin upset the Turf Cup that day), but her speed out of the gate was excellent, and she was visually impressive going through the long homestretch. She looks like a compact, powerful model who might be even better at this shorter trip. I look at the wide draw as a plus given her speed. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:54 BAQ 9th SHASI (#1, 8-1) ran well when coming wide and handling a tough distance when winning for this price on debut early in the year; second off the layoff and gets subtle class relief while facing two-life claimers this time. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets
5:48 KEE 10th DEPICTION (#3, 10-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Marcus Hersh). | Bet this race with DRF Bets
6:14 WO 10th DREAM SHAKE (#1, 8-1) won two seven-furlong stakes on different surfaces while on Lasix here in July before tanking without the diuretic in a G2 at Kentucky Downs, a race you can draw a line through. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets
6:47 WO 11th REASON TO DREAM (#5, 8-1) is debuting with a speed pedigree and has worked encouragingly for a trainer who can have one ready. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets
6:54 FNO 5th The first-time starters in this field have greater appeal than the runners with race experience. CRAZY STORM (#7, 12-1), trained by Victor Trujillo, worked a good half-mile in 48.60 seconds at Golden Gate Fields last Sunday for his debut. The gelding is by Cat Burglar, who wins with a sharp 21 percent of his juvenile first-time starters, and is a half-brother to a filly beaten a nose in her debut. -Steve Andersen | Bet this race with DRF Bets
8:26 FNO 8th MOB BOSS (#8, 10-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Steve Andersen). | Bet this race with DRF Bets
