DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, October 24, 2021

DRF Staff|Oct 23, 2021
Tiz the Bomb wins the 2021 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland Racecourse
Coady Photography Tiz the Bomb won the Bourbon Stakes despite breaking through the gate before the start, running off briefly, and being reloaded.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:00 KEE 1st WHATSTHECONNECTION (#4, 8-1) broke from the rail and beat nine rivals in his debut, a decent MSW at Indiana Grand. The horse just behind him, Mowins, not only won his next start but also has won two Indiana-bred stakes races this fall. The Bashford Manor obviously did not go well but they've regrouped - blinkers off, gelding, and in for a high tag. The work pattern sparkles & while I doubt he'll be as high a the morning-line odds the price still could be fair with the Ward tandem entered. -Marcus Hersch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:32 KEE 2nd XTREME GEM (#7, 6-1) been working for debut since early June at Arlington with trainer Mac Robertson's dad, Hugh Robertson, and I'm pretty sure neither of these accomplished trainers ever has worked with a 2yo who cost this much at auction ($625K). She popped a bullet half-mile first work after settling into Keeneland and, especially with this jockey named, one gets the sense she's going to be quick. First foal to race from mare who developed early and won the G1 Alcibiades at 2, and ran all right in three turf tries. Lands in a turf-sprint MSW that seems ripe for a first-timer. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:41 BEL 3rd DR BROWNES MIRACLE (#1, 10-1) had a good trip after showing some tactical speed in his career debut over this distance, but he was no match for the talented Slipstream (returned to win the Grade 3 Futurity with an 80 Beyer) in the stretch; thought that was a useful debut run and he appears to have landed in a much weaker field for the level this time. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:48 KEE 3rd Kentucky shippers historically do well over this circuit and VINEGAR VEGGIES (#6, 8-1) switches surfaces and adds blinkers after failing as the favorite at Churchill Downs. Certainly bred for turf as a half-sister to juvenile stakes-winning grass sprinter Foolish Humor out of a half-sister to multiple Grade 1-winning turf router Get Stormy. Recent workout matches up with Rubley's 3-year-old filly Indian Nichols (72 turf Beyer). Perhaps they breezed in company. Filly gets three-pound weight break facing the boys. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:19 LRL 4th PERFUME RIVER (#7, 8-1) didn't have a good setup against starter allowance foes last time out. Lost valuable early position when breaking inward from the rail post, was last on the rail behind a moderate pace, was forced to make a premature four-wide brush on the second turn, wound up five wide turning for home and still kicked on with some late interest. She's left the gate sideways in her last two so it's something to keep an eye on. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:59 GP 5th CPOWER (#5, 8-1) the victim of a brutal trip when last sighted over the green here in May. Drops to bottom for current connections off claim, taken to come up big off the bench and recent bullet gate drill. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:30 GP 6th STARSHIP MISHKA (#3, 5-1) an improving sort who finished second and in front of trio of next out winners. Shaky nod if getting some help up front. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:32 WO 6th SILENT CAUSEWAY (#3, 12-1) is taking on the boys in this NW3 off a sixth in a tough N1X on the inner turf, during which she saved ground over a course that seemed outside-biased. She was second to the brilliant future stakes winner Miss Speedy in her last Tapeta start in August. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:04 WO 7th RED HIERARCHY (#9, 6-1) folded in the final furlong after dueling up front when returning from an extended layoff Oct. 3, a race he probably needed. His tactical speed should come in handy after breaking from the outside here under regular rider Stein. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:21 BEL 8th GIGGLE FACTORY (#5, 8-1) was a big price when improving last time to rally for a close 2nd to class-dropping Princess Fawzia, who then returned to defeat a much strong field in her next start; should still be a fair price in this well-matched field and she can be closer to the pace this time, which could be key. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:44 KEE 8th Could be some serious pace on in this short field, and while the main track was kind to speed early on Friday and has been for much of this meet, I'll take the stalkers one-two with much longer price ROYAL MESA (#4, 20-1) over HIGHEST HONORS. Royal Mesa has done much of his best work over this surface and while perhaps not quite "good enough" could trip into an upset here. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:52 BEL 9th EXPERIENCED (#6, 10-1) is the lone 3yo in this Point of Entry and is too slow to win this race based simply on figures, but this is far from the strongest field for this kind of race and he has run well in each of his last two starts without winning; has a big pedigree to go along with his upside and he will get the distance. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:09 WO 9th EXECUTIVE SIGHT (#7, 8-1) was competitive in recent optional starters on both surfaces, ending up second most recently behind HITTERS PARK on the turf when they both had a fast pace to chase. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:23 BEL 10th SWINTON (#1, 10-1) a firster by the excellent debut sire Maclean's Music (wins with 17% of his debut runners) and a half-brother to a two-time winner from a dam who had a lot of speed en route to winning seven times in her career; Schosberg doesn't get many horses anymore but he knows what he's doing and used to be excellent with first-time starters. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
