DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, October 22, 2023
?q=100)
Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.
1:15 WO 1st UNDER SURVEILLANCE (#1, 10-1) placed in both of his inner turf outings earlier in the meet and could run big off the break in third try for hot trainer Flint. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:40 BAQ 3rd WINNING DRIVE (#3, 15-1) had little chance when dropped to this level two back and catching a speed-favoring track; also though he ran deceptively well last time when outrun early and finishing gamely after a front-running winner; needs the right trip but don't think he is overmatched by these horses, and he might be in better form that it appears. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:59 LRL 4th INSIDE STUNT (#6, 5-1) hasn't raced on dirt since facing four next-out winners during the Keeneland spring meet. (third-finisher returned to win two in a row at Saratoga with Beyers of 86 and 88). Prompted the pace from the deeper inside footing, was outpaced into the pocket, then didn't do much from the two path. Graduated here on dirt, and can get forward in second for Farrior. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:04 KEE 3rd DEVIL VISION (#3, 12-1) won for this $50K tag at the 2022 fall KEE meet and based on the last-start CBY turf run (he's not really a grass horse) could be coming back to a $50K KEE dirt-route claimer in form at least as good. He's fresh, and while he's never tried 1 1/8 miles, don't see why he can't get that trip. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:08 KEE 5th LADY GOLDSTART (#11, 15-1) typically has been a pace player but following a poor start last out she showed she can race effectively from off the lead -- a plus in a speed-packed spot. Surged late at return rival Current Climate, who got a big jump on her, and was claimed and raised in class by a winning barn. 5yo has made only nine grass starts and could have a touch of upside. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:16 BAQ 6th CUPIDS GIRL (#8, 5-1) was in very good form earlier this year while keeping tougher company, including s top-figure win on this track shortly before a layoff; drops second off the layoff after winding up wide off of a rated pace two weeks ago over a sloppy track. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:20 GP 6th SEDUCTION (#5, 4-1) looked like a comer for Pletcher but things didn't go so well in her first 2 stakes tries at MTH in July. In her defense, that was a tough heat - the winner came back to run 3rd in the G1 Cotillion, the 2nd filly came back to win a stakes at PRX and the 3rd finisher came back to win an allowance race at MTH by 9 1/2 lengths. They've given her time to regroup and that plus the drop can get her back on track. -Michael Hammersly | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:35 LRL 7th PAPAL LAW (#10, 20-1) performs well over this course, and he gave another hard-trying effort when fourth at huge odds earlier in the month. Pressed the 9-1 runner-up from the outside, poked a nose in front on the second turn, then stayed on pretty well for fourth. Expecting him to revert to the stalking tactics that worked well for him here last summer. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:12 KEE 7th ROMAGNA MIA (#6, 6-1) is no sure thing to see out this 1 1/2 mile trip (though I won't hold the Doha race against her), but in her US debut at CNL she ran into Fev Rover, who is top class, and Gina Romantica, who came back to beat In Italian in the G1 First Lady. She ought to be set for improvement and has gotten onto a strong steady work pattern. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:17 GP 8th KHOZEIRESS (#7, 5-1) showed ample talent starting his career here winter into the spring, topped off by a sharp 2nd in the Carry Back June 24. He wasn't as good at SAR Aug 3 but they've given him time to regroup and brought him back to a place you know he loves. He's worked smartly. -Michael Hammersly | Bet this race with DRF Bets
5:08 WO 8th MY GIRL SKY (#8, 20-1) has been competitive vs. N2X/$50K opposition in routes this year and should be a good fit in this 7 1/2-furlong inner turf OS stakes. Chris Husbands replaces the injured Walcott on the KV charge, who won an OS stakes for 3yo fillies last fall. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets
6:24 GG 5th VANISKY (#7, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Steve Andersen). | Bet this race with DRF Bets
6:55 GG 6th SWEET LAYLA RAE (#5, 8-1) arguably should have won for the second time in her sixth start when she finished seventh by 1 1-4 lengths in a starter allowance at 5 1-2 furlongs on the synthetic main track on Oct. 2. She raced wide and in traffic in the stretch while closing steadily. Sweet Layla Rae was beaten a head in a five-furlong turf race in her only previous start at the distance at Santa Rosa in August and should be closing through this field of seven. -Steve Andersen | Bet this race with DRF Bets
7:26 GG 7th YOU ENJOY MYSELF (#4, 8-1) was claimed for $8,000 by Blaine Wright when the gelding finished sixth of nine after a wide trip in a one-mile maiden race on Oct. 2 in his second career start. In his debut in September, You Enjoy Myself overcame a troubled start to finish a good second in a $5,000 claimer for sprinters. A return to a sprint distance should help You Enjoy Myself in this big field of 10, provided the gelding can have a better start. -Steve Andersen | Bet this race with DRF Bets
8:11 SA 9th TOUCHDOWN KITTLE (#2, 4-1) stretches to a route for the first time and figures to make the lead. Bred to run long on both sides of his pedigree (Tiznow, Pleasantly Perfect), 'KITTLE just might wire the field second start back. -Brad Free | Bet this race with DRF Bets
