DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, October 2, 2022

DRF Staff|Oct 01, 2022
Santa Anita race start, 2021
Emily Shields Santa Anita's Saturday card will feature a mandatory payout in the Rainbow pick six.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action. 12:25

GP 1st IMPETUOUS SOUL (#2, 12-1) taken for some value to get things going stretching back out off another gap between starts. Has the speed to lead these a merry chase if getting clear as expected for this tag. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:08 LRL 2nd PAY THE SQUID (#6, 12-1) seemed a bit hot in the preliminaries at Colonial, broke sharp, then was outsprinted along the inside behind a hot pace. Split horses on the backstretch, dropped inside entering the second turn, altered out into the stretch and finished evenly without threatening Dandy Handyman (entered in Saturday's Laurel Futurity). Barn went 3 for 7 (43%, $7.80 ROI) on turf between Sept. 15 and Sept. 24. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:02 BAQ 3rd KINENOS (#5, 4-1) couldn't quite reach while trying to close into a pace that held together over this distance off the layoff; three starts since then have all come going longer vs. stakes-quality rivals; lone win last year came over ten furlongs but he is stakes-placed going shorter and handles give in the ground. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:16 WO 3rd PASSIONPLATE (#8, 10-1) has worked fast and is well-regarded by 12% first-out trainer DePaulo. The Hutzel homebred is a half-brother to 2yo stakes winner Fair Maiden, who was third in the G1 Natalma. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:19 GP 5th CINDY'S SONG (#4, 20-1) drops second off the claim, shortens up to five furlongs and should come running off what may prove a contested pace with the logical VELOCE BELLA potentially getting early challanges from Witch of Love and/or MIRACLE DRUG. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:33 BAQ 4th IRON LION IN ZION (#9, 6-1) rallied strongly into a setup to break his maiden second out as a 2yo, before trying a stake to no avail and then getting time off; appeared to really need that return when getting very tired behind a front-running winner; ran better than it looks last time when bumped hard at the start to wind up at the back in a race that was dominated up close. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:48 WO 4th PRIDEOFDISTINCTION (#2, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:11 LRL 6th EL BAILADOR (#3, 10-1) hit the board on dirt at Tampa Bay last year, then gave a good try following 196-day layoff in Tapeta sprint at Gulfstream. Prompted a quick pace three wide in the latter heat and stayed on to finish just behind Adios Gary (returned to win a quarter maiden claimer over Tapeta with a 72 Beyer). Moves back to the main and drops into a claimer for the first time with solid tactical speed. Monterrey departs for Jahez. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:41 LRL 7th ROSELBA (#6, 8-1) is pretty quick from the stalls and exits a good try two weeks ago against Jersey-breds at Monmouth. No real excuses that day as she set a reasonable pace as the favorite only to be run down late by Bramble Bay, a Saratoga invader with $449,413 in the bank. Ran pretty well here last fall, but must avoid a prolonged pace dispute. Barn went 3 for 12 (25%, $3.42 ROI) between Sept. 5 and Sept. 27. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:57 GP 8th TORETTO (#1, 9-2) has taken readily to the Tapeta and back with Fla. breds which means he won't have to deal with Wora this time around. Best good enough with these. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:29 GP 9th WENT WEST (#8, 8-1) returned from long layoff to beat this same kind with 96 Beyer Fig a year ago beating likes of Gatsby and PUDDING in the process. Training well enough to do it again in today's main event. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:03 WO 8th DRAGON'S BREW (#2, 8-1) mounted a wide bid for second when dropping to this $25K class in a seven-furlong turf sprint a month ago. He's 2 for 6 on the Tapeta and could be cycling up to a peak performance. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:12 WO 10th SOVEREIGN CAUSE (#8, 10-1) is moving back up to maiden special company off a troubled third vs. OS/$40K maidens and could be on the brink of a breakthrough. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:23 GG 10th TABLE FOR TWO (#8, 9-2) arguably should have won a maiden special weight race at a mile on the synthetic track on Sept. 11. The 3-year-old colt was well-placed behind the leaders on the turn when jockey Pedro Terrero had to pause Table for Two for racing room. Table for Two closed well through the final furlong and was beaten a length. Terrero is back aboard Table for Two who was a good third on turf in May in his only previous start on the surface. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:38 SA 10th GET ON THE BUS (#8, 8-1) can post a minor upset in this N1X turf route. She is racing into shape, making her third start following a layoff, and wants every bit of this nine-furlong trip. The two best races of her career were long-distance turf races last year. Tab for an upset. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:53 GG 11th MISCHIEVOUS CURLIN (#7, 7-2) is a danger from a tracking position in this allowance race that closes the late summer meeting. The Big Fresno Fair begins a two-week meeting on Friday. Mischievous Curlin closed from third to be second in an allowance race on Sept. 5 and should have a quicker pace to follow in this field thanks to the presence of ANGEL'S ADVOCATE. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
