DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, May 29, 2022

DRF Staff|May 28, 2022
Kavod (right) finishes second in the Tremont Stakes at Belmont
Barbara D. Livingston Kavod (right) finishes second to Overbore in the Tremont Stakes at Belmont Park.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:32 BEL 2nd INTELLIGENCEREPORT (#3, 8-1) didn't earn much of a figure en route to winning his debut back in February, though he did overcome a bobble at the start and a wide trip while scoring easily; still looked a little green in that debut and has been in the wrong spots since; drops back down looking to finally improve with Lasix on. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:49 WO 4th SOUPER WATSON (#7, 5-1) got away slowly before saving ground on the turn and then closed in the four-path in the stretch to finish third in his comeback behind AIM FOR THE SKY. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:53 PIM 5th AMENDED (#7, 8-1) has exceeded the Beyer par for this class level on several occasions, and now returns to preferred surface after several main track tried. Hasn't run on the grass since the winter at Fair Grounds, and he worked out a good tactical trip against a solid bunch (fourth-finisher returned to win a $15,000 "three-life" seller there with a 76 Beyer). -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:03 BEL 5th EMBOITE (#5, 4-1) made his debut last October for Pletcher and got bet hard, before looking a bit green and lacking speed in a short field and settling for third; he didn't appear to have real trouble early, but he was starting to run late and liked the way he carried on past the wire in that spot; starts back with a trainer change to Maker. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:13 GP 5th CALI DIVINE (#1, 10-1) dueled winner, held willingly enough last time after showing promise three back behind likes of in form Conundrum Queen. Taken at a bit of a price to perhaps get brave if hustled away from rail draw to control this one from outset. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:45 GP 6th SWEET PEARL (#2, 8-1) beat wide open $12,500 company here earlier this winter and need only repeat that kind of try to return quick dividends for new barn off the claim. Blew out bullet for this. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:56 PIM 7th SHELLY ISLAND (#11, 6-1) gave a good try when second on turf two starts back. Stalked in between horses, dropped inside, moved up the rail in the stretch and was second to a sharp favorite (Justwaveandsmile returned to win for $12,500 with a 78 Beyer). Uninterested in the last start of 2021 as he can't stand up on dirt, but usually fires fresh and should be moving late. Toledo lands here instead of Great Camanoe. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:56 WO 6th CEREBRO (#4, 6-1) has worked well and is by the superb speed/debut sire Maclean's Music. His stakes-placed dam won 15 of 56 starts and $550K, which included a first-out score at 3. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:08 BEL 7th LOST IN ROME (#3, 6-1) saw his form decline following the claim for $20k last November, though he caught a bunch of wet tracks and still ran well at times; has some strong back form to get to as he goes off the claim for a dangerous trainer and gets an immediate equipment change. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:09 LAD 4th BORN INTO BAD NEWS (#2, 8-1) is by a 6% debut turf sire. Her dam went 2-0-0-0 on the green. All 6 sibs won on the grass with four having beat winners. We know this filly can get the distance as she beat half the field home only two back at Oaklawn. She is working locally and could love the grass all at a nice price. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:27 MTH 10th NIP OF BOURBON (#5, 5-1) posted his lone career win on the turf but he's run well in defeat on the dirt on several occasions, including the effort two back when he was forced to try to close in a race lacking speed; he is also fast enough to make the lead, and given the uncertain race flow in this race that could well be the strategy, and he can steal it if he can get clear easily enough. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:28 PIM 8th BLUE MOON BUNNY (#7, 6-1) is by a sire that connects with 23% of older first-time starters (compared to 9% industry average). The dam won six sprints including her debut, and is a half-sister to multiple stakes-winning dirt sprinter Spirited Game (won debut). The second dam also won her career debut going 5 1/2 furlongs at Laurel. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:37 LAD 5th GOLDEN PEGASUS (#4, 5-1) did beat half the field home in his debut while facing better at the Fair Grounds. His second start was poor but he was trying two turns and the turf for the first time all while getting little play at 15-1. Second off the layoff and a return to a dirt sprint should bring about a better effort. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:10 CBY 7th DR JACK (#9, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:19 GP 9th RUNNING LEGACY (#2, 10-1) has tried all three surfaces now returns to scene of her maiden win, on Tapeta for today's main event. Working extremely well, should offer some value behind logical choices LOVE HER LOTS and REPUBLIQUE. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:23 LS 7th DYNA STRIKE (#4, 8-1) is proven at a mile on turf. He also faced steeper last out in what was his first start against winners. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:23 MTH 12th RECKLESS PLACE (#5, 3-1) ran a big race in that last one, closing with interest to get the place and finishing just a length behind the winner, who was with the pace from the start; that rival posted a Beyer (64) a few points above par for the class and distance (59), and while this gelding moves up in class off that race he appears to be good enough to handle the rise given a better pace set up. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:51 GP 10th PRETTYASAPENNY (#9, 8-1) comes off what appeared to be a much needed outing at first asking when in trouble several times during the course of the race. Expect marked improvement in nightcap. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:13 SA 5th The fourth-place dirt finish last out by PIROLI (#9, 6-1) was better than it looks, he can win this maiden turf mile on the surface change. Last out he got keen and rank early, shuffled to last, uncorked a middle move on the far turn and into the lane, then flattened out in a race dominated by three front-runners. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:47 LS 10th PAPAWS BOY (#11, 6-1) must overcome the wide post, but is back with statebreds and could be sitting on a peak race in the third start of his form cycle. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:30 HST 6th WE B THREE (#2, 4-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Randy Goulding). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
