DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, May 24, 2020

DRF Staff|May 23, 2020
Gulfstream Park racing
Ronnie Betor Due to a number of northern horses staying put at Gulfstream Park, the track is adding overnight stakes to its second condition book of the spring meet.

With most other North American sports being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, we hope the sport of horse racing can entertain you during these trying times. Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:15 GP 2nd Forgive the hung-very-wide first crack vs. winners for LUXE DIAMOND (#5, 4-1) and she might well be deserving of support yet again, having been favored in each of her last 3 for Joey O.; the two-back romp with the 66 BSF hard to overlook. -Marty McGee

3:30 SA 1st RAUL ROSAS (#1, 6-1) is the speed of the field, drawn inside, and the choice to lead these Cal-bred allowance turf sprinters gate to wire. He set a fast pace wiring a restricted claiming field on this course two back, reproduced his form winning an 870-yarder at Los Al, and has worked fast since. Come catch him. -Brad Free

4:52 GP 9th WAR GIANT (#2, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Mary McGee).

5:05 LS 3rd CIAO CIAO (#4, 10-1) makes a meaningful class move, as she starts in the claiming ranks for the first time in her career. She alsogets back to the statebred ranks after facing open company allowance foes. -Mary Rampellini

5:24 GP 10th The layoff of nearly 6 months for NETTLETON (#4, 10-1) is an obvious concern, and so are his low BSFs from his 2yo season, but seems he’s got a touch of class that could carry the day in his first try vs. older types; drilling right along at Palm Meadows for an outfit (J.Abreu) that does solid work; price should be right. -Marty McGee

5:35 LS 4th GEORGIA DEPUTY (#10, 5-1) must overcome the widest post, but like that he has an age edge on one of his chief rivals, who is 3, and that he’s been facing steeper than the field’s other top choice. -Mary Rampellini

6:12 SA 6th This N1X turf mile is a split of race 8. GO DADDY GO (#8, 6-1) found a mile and a quarter out of reach last time out in his first against winners; he finished sixth at 13-1. But if he reproduces his maiden win two back at this one-mile trip, he can spring an upset. The lightly raced son of Scat Daddy won that mile maiden race with a sharp 23.29 final quarter-mile. He has tactical speed, a finishing kick at this distance, and could start at a generous price in a wide-open race. Tab for a mild “upset.” -Brad Free

6:45 SA 7th The work pattern of PRESS BRIEFING (#3, 5-1) suggests he is well-meant. By above-average debut stallion Khozan (18 percent winners first out), the gelding’s once-a-week work pattern includes three recent gate drills. Multiple gate drills are not necessarily a good thing, but Miller can get older first-timers ready to roll. -Brad Free

7:37 LS 8th ZYRAMID (#1, 4-1) was a maiden special weight winner at Saratoga. He now makes the move to turf and gets pedigree support for the surface. -Mary Rampellini
