DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, May 23, 2021

DRF Staff|May 22, 2021
Step Dancer wins the Awad Stakes at Belmont Park
Chelsea Durand/NYRA Step Dancer rallies to victory in the Awad last fall. He is back with statebreds and will be treated with Lasix for the first time Thursday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:22 GP 2nd I AM THE BOSS (#1, 4-1) has been away since trouncing a strong group of maidens, her effort totally flattered when four of her victims returned to win their next starts. Has gotten in plenty of practice over the green prepping for return. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

1:31 BEL 2nd BERTINGA (#7, 4-1) sat a nice trip and was quickly no match when briefly up to contention in her MSW debut last December; dropped off the layoff and once again came up empty in the stretch after chasing a solid pace sprinting; puts races together while taking blinkers off looking to find a finish this time, and her speed might play in this spot. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

1:38 PIM 3rd DANCING TIL DUSK (#9, 9-2) ran well in her last two turf appearances of 2020 and has the speed to get close to the pace in her seasonal debut. Pressed the fast pace set by 2 to 1 shot Celebre (finished fourth) at Laurel on Sept. 17, took over turning for home and just missed. The sixth-finisher returned to graduate by 7 1/2 lengths in a bottom maiden claimer on dirt with a 61 Beyer. Marquez lands here instead of Bell the Cat. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

2:31 BEL 4th PERPETUAL CHANGE (#10, 8-1) ran a backward race in his debut at the end of last year, showing some early speed before dropping back, appearing to lose contention around the second turn, and then rallying again late once moving outside to get up for 2nd at the end; draws outside for his return and needs to be more professional, but he ran pretty well first time out. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

2:39 PIM 5th ORDER FOR PORKY (#10, 8-1) is a half-brother to a grass winner by a 14% first-turf sire. The dam is a half-sister to stakes-winning turf routers Commendation and Eventail. Gave a solid effort to win over this distance three starts back and exits a key race at Parx on March 30. (Forloveofcountry returned to win a $25,000 starter on dirt here with a 90 Beyer). Working steadily at Fair Hill and has the tactical speed to find a nice spot just off the early leaders. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

3:43 PIM 7th FED UP FIRED UP (#7, 8-1) received a nice lung-opener when facing stakes foes in first start following 229-day layoff. Saved ground at the back, angled out off heels in upper stretch and came with a solid finish against the likes of Vigilantes Way (returned to finish second in the Grade 3 Gallorette with an 85 Beyer). Lacks some of the upside that the others possess, but the veteran should give a good late run given enough pace up front. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

4:08 BEL 7th KILLER DRESS (#2, 5-1) faced better with a bit of a trip two back then rated last time and came with a good finish to close down the speedy Hohohoho, who shipped here to defeat $50k claimers last week, only to be the victim of a questionable disqualification; appears to be versatile enough to get any kind of a trip and still has upside. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

4:29 GP 8th RIVERCREST ROAD (#4, 15-1) stretches out to what may be her preferred distance off much needed sprint prep while wheeling back on very short rest. Pino stays, looking for big improvement here. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

5:12 BEL 9th CROCK OF GOLD (#3, 15-1) made one start last year at Saratoga, where he got outpaced early and was racing on late behind subsequent stakes winner Eagle Orb; returned from the layoff last time and once again was outpaced in a race that came back fast (96 Beyer for the winner); drops and may be better than he looks. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

5:35 GP 10th Can DUROCHER (#7, 6-1) finally find way back to winner’s circle after extended absence? This might be the spot with plenty of pace to run at if race goes as expected. Can be along if old guy can repeat that big effort here during Championship meet behind Morocco. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race
