DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, May 1, 2022

DRF Staff|Apr 30, 2022
Bankit wins the 2021 John B. Campbell Stakes at Laurel Park
Jerry Dzierwinski/Maryland Jockey Club Bankit has was his last two races, including this victory in the John Campbell at Laurel.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:05 GP 1st MUNGER (#9, 9-2) showed some promise in his debut. He got squeezed back at the start and after falling well back closed strongly while going very wide around the stretch turn. He's had a couple of decent interim works and could be sitting on a big effort with a race behind him. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:15 LRL 2nd CAMELIA ROD (#7, 10-1) looked good dusting off bottom maiden claimers over sloppy going, then was probably in over her head against the likes of Click to Confirm (subsequently twice stakes-placed). She's a half-sister to a turf winner by a promising young sire with a hidden turf pedigree. Lots of upside potential. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:29 OP 2nd CHAKRA (#7, 4-1) won in good time last out and for the effort earned what ranks as this field's best last-race Beyer Speed Figure. She is a half-sister to Gallon, a multiple stakes winner of $262K. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:50 LRL 5th Although DOWN TO THE WIRE (#12, 6-1) is out of a winning half-sister to multiple stakes-winning dirt performer Digger, there are a good amount of European turf influences in the family including Grade 3-winning router Millie's Quest. Must overcome tough post, but barn recently sent out dirt debut winners Low Country Dude (21 to 1 odds on March 11) and Torre Branca (2 to 1 on April 10). -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:54 WO 4th First-time gelding GALVASTON (#11, 15-1) is tagged for the first time and was able to hit the board in both of his "fresh" starts in the past. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:03 LS 2nd MORE LIKE IT (#1, 4-1) might be better going longer, but he does have a win going 5 1/2 furlongs and he fits better here than he did in his latest. His race two back at this level was better than it looks on paper and he sure looked good winning a $15K N2L two back. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:14 BEL 5th MEGAYACHT (#4, 10-1) is facing his toughest field to date in this spot, but is doing so while in form and also catches some of his main rivals off the layoff; good effort last time while closing down a rival that had the jump on him, and he also looked good winning his most recent turf start over eleven furlongs. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:22 LRL 6th SHE'S A BIG DEAL (#6, 8-1) prompted a three-ply pace from the inside, looked in hot water at the three-sixteenths, but gamely re-rallied to get her nose down . The fourth-finisher returned to win for $25,000 with a 67 Beyer. Has the tactical speed to work out a trip behind the pace if necessary. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:31 LS 3rd RANCHO BARGO (#4, 5-1) comes into this off a couple of sharp efforts and loves the local surface. He also makes his first start for Cravens who the past five years has a 23% strike rate and $3.13 ROI first-off-the claim. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:06 GP 7th KNOWWHENTOFOLDEM (#3, 9-2) followed up a narrow loss in her debut on Tapeta with a victory on turf and was haltered by De La Cerda who the past couple of years has a 23% strike rate and $1.98 ROI with claimed horses running back the first time. She's had two strong interim works so expecting another strong performance. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:27 LRL 8th RIPKEN (#2, 9-2) didn't do much against two next-out winners on dirt, but think he's better on turf and synthetic, and deserves one more chance against this field. Far from embarrassed at Turfway two back following 442-day layoff as he tracked four wide on the backstretch before giving an even finish (the winner came back to win a first-level allowance there with an 83 Beyer). -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:27 LS 5th ROBBER BARON (#10, 8-1) was in tough in is latest at Oaklawn and will appreciate the easier company he is facing here. His best races have been on Tapeta, but he has a couple of decent races on turf and should get a nice trip from a forward position in his second start following a layoff. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:39 GP 8th TIZ ROMANTIC (#8, 6-1) was impressive winning a $25K conditioned claimer in his first start for Yanez and the 86 Beyer Speed Figure he received for his blowout victory stands out. He was trying turf for just the second time in his 14 lifetime starts and from what he showed us last time it appears to be his preferred surface. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:39 WO 7th SILENT RUNNER (#9, 15-1) has worked nicely for his first outing since a victory over Ontario-sired stock in the Nov. 21 Frost King Stakes. He figures to track all the speed on the outside and could hit the ticket at a square price in this open stakes. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:27 BEL 9th SMOKE AND HEAT (#9, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
