DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, March 29, 2020

DRF Staff|Mar 28, 2020
Tampa Bay Downs, January 2011
Tom Cooley On Saturday, Jan. 25, Tampa Bay Downs handled a staggering $6.2 million.

With most other North American sports being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, we hope the sport of horse racing can entertain you during these trying times. Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook - something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day's action.

12:25 TAM 1st LARGE (#10, 8-1) got checks in both of his first two starts to date and he ran well each time, making a big middle move in his debut and then rallying some for the place last time despite moderate splits up front; should get an improved pace today. -Kenny Peck

1:30 GP 2nd ENLISTING (#12, 7-2) was monstrous blasting similar here Feb. 16. In fact, her 2 starts on this main track (she won both) were 2 of her best so it’s obvious she loves it here. A repeat of that Feb. 16 means the others are running for 2nd, though it’s a tad disconcerting they claimed her for $8K that day and bring her back for the same price instead of increasing her in value. Hey, they don’t give anything away out here. -Michael Hammersly

1:48 TAM 4th NATIVE LION (#4, 7-2) will have to negotiate 11 furlongs for the first time but she could have the luxury of a loose lead, as she does seem to be the main pacesetter in this field, which is otherwise light on pace; she comes off a win against several of these same runners going 1 1/8 miles, benefiting from a forward trip, and with another tactical advantage a repeat is certainly within reach. -Kenny Peck

2:30 OP 1st H. M. S. PINAFORE (#6, 4-1) gets the nod. She’s been facing steeper and for this moves back to a mile and a sixteenth and note she won the last two times she raced at the distance. H. M. S. PINAFORE also gets in light, under apprentice Roberts. -Mary Rampellini

2:50 TAM 6th FASHION MO’s (#7, 12-1) dam won four races overseas on the grass and was 2nd in the Grade 1 Garden City in one of her two U. S. starts, and she has produced three winners from four starters thus far; this filly has some deceptively good works and may fly under the radar against this field in terms of the betting. -Kenny Peck

4:06 GP 7th CASTAGNO (#8, 5-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Michael Hammersly).

4:08 OP 4th HEFFINGTON (#6, 3-1) was second against similar last out and for the effort earned what ranks as this field’s best last-race Beyer Figure. For this trip she adds blinkers, which is a high-percentage equipment move for Broberg. -Mary Rampellini

4:39 GP 8th WESTERLAND (#11, 12-1) made a smart midrace move in a very tough optional claimer here Jan. 26 before flattening out to end up 7th. As noted, that was a strong race as the runner-up came back to win a G3 and the 4th finisher came back to win a stakes. He’s been given time since, drops and has worked well. -Michael Hammersly

5:10 OP 6th BUMP BAILEY (#7, 5-2) is back in the conditioned claiming ranks after running a credible third against $50K starter allowance foes in what was his Oaklawn debut. -Mary Rampellini

5:11 GP 9th REMARKABLE SOUL (#1, 12-1) chased the pace and stayed for 3rd here Feb. 7 in her first start in almost 8 months. Sure, she was no threat (beaten by 12 3/4 lengths) but the winner, Royal Flag, looks like a real comer for Chad Brown and was targeting a G3 at KEE before that meet got canceled. She faces no on like that here and that, plus a race under her belt after the long layoff, might do the trick at a price. -Michael Hammersly
