DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, July 24, 2022

DRF Staff|Jul 23, 2022
Turf racing at Monmouth Park, July 2020
Bill Denver/Equi-Photo One of the issues yet to be resolved with fixed-odds betting is how to handle wagers when a race is switched from turf to dirt resulting in multiple scratches.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:00 WO 1st HONEY WON'T (#6, 6-1) stalked three-wide after breaking from the outside post 11 before enduring a heart-breaking loss when returning from a break on the turf. Tapeta isn't his preferred surface, but he could make some noise off the claim with Hernandez picking up the mount. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:25 GP 3rd Switching over to the Tapeta no bad idea in regard to BALI MOON (#7, 8-1), who has shown a nice turn of foot on the main in each of her first two, including the last-out Morici debut when getting first Lasix; might well take em deeper this time when tripping out cleanly from her outer box. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:39 MTH 4th STONE IN LOVE (#4, 6-1) is the first starter out of the dam, who posted her lone win in a dirt route, but she as a couple of works that suggest she has some speed, and trainer Kathleen DeMasi has good stats with firsters (18%, $2.32 ROI); may be overlooked some in the wagering with some tough first-out barns represented here but she is more than capable. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:15 SAR 3rd DOCTOR LOVE (#4, 4-1) scored from out of it in his debut at Oaklawn and didn't appear to luck into that victory at all while overcoming a slow start and an outside trip while continuously improving his position; drops to the lowest level yet after facing much better horses in his only two dirt starts since. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:35 MTH 6th SUNSET PROVISION (#5, 9-2) goes long on the turf for the first time but he has run well routing and he has run well on the grass, in sprints, and it's logical to conclude he will find two turns on this surface to be just what he's looking for; adds blinkers for this, and may show more speed as a result. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:40 WO 4th TOO MUCH TALK (#7, 8-1) lagged behind the field after getting away slowly and the closed outside for second in his seven-furlong debut on the Tapeta. The son of superb turf sire English Channel is a full-brother to the long-winded Breeders' Stakes victor British Royalty. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:49 SAR 4th CALL ME HARRY (#5, 8-1) won the first two starts of his career over course and distance as a 2yo, then got wired in his only other start sprinting on this course while off the layoff; continued racing on good form sprinting on turf last year despite going 1 for 6; third off the layoff dropping down with a versatile running style. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:00 GP 6th Return try by MEKANO (#9, 8-1) when fading to 6th in the same July 3 race that some of these other bottom-level mdn.-claimers contested can help in a big way toward this second start off the 3+ month layoff; looking for a more even early effort before bidding into what could be a wide-open fray; difficult opening leg to the 20-cent Rainbow 6, for sure. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:03 MTH 7th JOHNNY OIL (#1, 12-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:34 GP 7th Thinking maybe the slight stretch from 6 to 7 furlongs could benefit both of the inside draws, KENYA SUN (#1, 6-1) and EVERTHREE, in this well-matched N3L bottom-level filly-mare race that kicks off the late pick five; both have been just okay going a bit shorter, but this should give them a better chance to find the front as they move toward the half-mile pole. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:59 MTH 9th GLORIOUS MOMENT (#5, 5-1) makes his U. S. debut and is getting Lasix for the first time, and this is his first start as a gelding; he's been away since September but he won well off a layoff last year, albeit a shorter one than this, and he gets the services of Paco Lopez, which signals intent. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:45 SAC 1st IDAHO ONCE (#3, 4-1) could only manage fifth in a field of eight in his debut in a maiden special weight race at Golden Gate Fields on June 12. Idaho Once broke from the rail in that race, but has a better post in the middle of this five-horse field. This month, Idaho Once has had three works at Sacramento. While the works were not quick, it may not take much to beat this field. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:39 SAR 9th TUSCAN QUEEN (#8, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:55 LAD 5th MISS PATTY JO (#2, 6-1) is by a 19% debut sire. Her dam went 36-7-4-5 and earned 338K. One of two sibs won and is a multiple winner. Works are fine and this filly debuts with Lasix (who doesn't?). -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:13 SAR 10th PIVOTAL MISSION (#6, 6-1) ran twice here as a 2yo last summer and improved in the second of those while only getting clear late and gaining ground into a slow pace; tried two stakes after that to no avail while appearing to hang a bit in the first of those; second off the layoff taking a slight drop with Lasix on. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:28 WO 11th PAINTING THE MOON (#5, 20-1) went four-wide on the turn en route a fifth-place finish in a 12-horse field at first asking. His hot trainer Coty has excellent numbers with maiden second-timers. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:48 SAC 5th FULL OF LIFE (#5, 4-1) faded from contention to finish last of six in an $8,000 claimer for non-winners of two at a mile and 70 yards at Pleasanton on July 8 and returns to a more appropriate sprint distance in this restricted $5,000 claimer. Full of Life is quick enough to set the pace, and may not face too much pressure against these modest rivals. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:18 SAC 8th A MAN'S MAN (#2, 4-1) has won three of his last four starts and faces a class test in this first-condition allowance race. As recently as May, A Man's Man was running in an $8,000 claimer at Golden Gate Fields, but his recent wins in a starter allowance and a restricted $20,000 claimer are encouraging. A three-time winner in seven starts this year, A Man's Man's is a threat as a stalker. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:33 DMR 8th EXTRA HOPE (#4, 4-1), who was gelded in February and is rounding back into form, gets the call to win this G3 dirt marathon. His runner-up last out to improving Parnelli was promising; 'HOPE subsequently worked with G1-placed Royal Ship. Although Royal Ship worked better, it was a creditable drill by 'HOPE, who won a G3 at Del Mar in fall 2020. He is the "now" horse. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
