DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, August 8, 2021

DRF Staff|Aug 07, 2021
Viadera (left, pink helmet) wins the 2020 Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar
Benoit Photo Viadera (pink cap) gets up to win the Grade 1 Matriarch on Nov. 29 at Del Mar.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:05 SAR 1st SEASCAPE (#3, 9-2) was cut back to sprint two back for $50k and was an easy winner after letting a rival go to track her to the stretch; switches from turf to dirt second off the claim for Diodoro. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

1:38 WO 2nd PARMIGIANO (#4, 5-1) encountered trouble on the turn before closing for second two back in a shorter NW2 sprint on the main turf. He never fired most recently in a bounce-like performance on the Tapeta, and should rebound in his third start off an extended layoff. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

2:26 PIM 4th SENOR SEVILLE (#5, 6-1) is a fascinating entrant returning from a 301-day layoff for new connections (trainer is 2 for 24, 8%, $2.48 ROI over the past five years). Think his last two races are better than they look on paper. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

2:32 GP 4th JACKSON (#5, 9-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Marty McGee). | Get PPs for this race

3:03 MTH 7th ADVISE AND CONSENT (#4, 6-1) is the first runner out of a dam who posted her lone career win in three starts in a dirt route but he merits immediate respect given the connections, as Chad Brown wins at a high rate with debuting grass horses; meets a seemingly average field for the class level. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

3:06 GP 5th The stretchout and subtle class drop might be enough to get MULSANNE RUN (#9, 9-2) over the top after the 3yo Will Take Charge colt showed signs of life when going turf-to-dirt two Sundays ago; outside draw can help him and Diaz work out the right kind of trip; leading barn takes no prisoners. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race

3:11 WO 5th LETTHEBIGHOSSROLL (#1, 12-1) didn't show much in his two outings at the meet, but the veteran resides in a live barn and could wake up as a longshot in his third start off the bench. Note that he won a race over this course and distance last year. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

3:30 PIM 6th PREMIERE CHOICE (#8, 6-1) saved ground in midpack in lone turf start last year, then tired badly along the inside. Wonder if something went physically amiss during the race as he didn't post a published workout in almost a year. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

3:41 WO 6th I'M A CHI TOO (#10, 12-1) dueled up front along the rail before tiring in his five-furlong debut in a maiden special won by Twenty Four Mamba, who subsequently finished a clear second behind the favored shipper One Timer in the Victoria Stakes. He's meeting much easier OS/$40K rivals here with Lasix added. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

3:55 SAR 6th POPULAR VOTE (#1, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race

4:05 MTH 9th EQUAL MEASURE (#4, 9-2) stretches out off the claim and has lots of room to improve off that last try, a sprint where she had a fair amount of trouble, including a slow break; best recent figures very much make her the one to beat in her first try over the course. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

4:11 WO 7th USING COCONUTS (#5, 6-1) rallied to finish a close second in both of her appearances, most recently going 7 1/2 furlongs around two turns on the inner turf. She has some speed to chase in this 6 1/2-furlong maiden special on the main course. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

4:14 GP 7th Winning a two-turn MSW for 3yos on a Saturday during the championship meet is no easy feat, but that's what ANOTHER DUKE (#6, 5-1) did in January (and on Pegasus Day, no less) before going to the sidelines; quite possible the newly gelded son of Bodemeister may need this race, and the distance may not be ideal, but his class and consistency may supercede all that; giving him the benefit of the doubt ahead of what's a promising career still to unfold. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race

4:39 PIM 8th ATREYU (#8, 4-1) gave a game pacesetting try in first start over the year. He set the early pace while pressured by 4 to 1 shot Jag (finished last), opened up turning into the stretch and placed second to the favorite while finishing ahead of two of today's rivals. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

4:48 GP 8th RACE DAY SPEED (#6, 9-2) is a 4-time winner who as a 3yo is once again exempt from the N2L restriction that applies to older rivals here; didn't show all that much off the Levy claim four Sundays ago, but she's better than that; slight edge from this corner in what shapes up as a real tussle to end the SoFla weekend. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race

5:05 SAR 8th BOSS LADY KIM's (#5, 30-1) debut win returned a slow figure but am happy not to judge her on that alone. she did not break sharply in that race to wind up last early, but went right up to contest the pace on the outside form a long way out, and denied a stiff challenge in the stretch after she put away her pace rivals; the filly she denied that day returned to air in her next start with a 67 Beyer. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

5:39 SAR 9th PLUM ALI (#4, 5-1) remains a question mark over longer distances but there is no denying that she has been compromised by trips and dynamics in all three starts as a 3yo. Was likely best in the Wonder Again two back when left with too much to do late and flashing home, and she had little chance last time when rating last and being forced wide to the stretch behind Santa Barbara; still think she is as good as anyone in here in a truly run race. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

7:00 DMR 5th BIG SUMMER (#9, 5-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Brad Free). | Get PPs for this race

8:00 DMR 7th Veteran stakes winner MR VARGAS (#7, 7-2) returns from a six-month layoff as the "best horse" in this $40k claiming turf sprint. A two-time winner over the DMR turf course including a G3, the speedster gets a five-pound apprentice allowance and can be gone first start back. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race

9:00 DMR 9th This G3 turf route for 3yos is ripe for an upset by Euro-import ZOFFARELLI (#5, 10-1). He faced older and ran well last out, finishing only a head behind an older five-time winner despite being trapped behind runners the final quarter-mile. It was a better-than-looked runner-up effort by the gelding, who is fresh off the plane and facing modest local turf 3yos. He can sit back, wait, and blast home for the upset. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race

9:30 DMR 10th Class-drop maiden HEAD FOR BUSINESS (#5, 5-1), who dueled and cracked his first four starts, drops to the maiden-20 bottom and shortens to five and a half. Come catch him. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race
