DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, August 28, 2022

DRF Staff|Aug 27, 2022
Saratoga chute scenic
Barbara D. Livingston Saratoga returns to action Wednesday for the second week of the 2022 meet.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:44 MTH 2nd AMAZING GRACES JOY (#1, 3-1) has speed and the rail, and in a race that's a little light on pace that should prove to be a big edge in this sprint; this is the first time she'll break from this post but given a clean getaway she's a prime candidate to steal this. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

2:15 SAR 3rd THISMIGHTBETHEONE (#5, 6-1) cut back to break her maiden from just off the pace while on the drop back in April; ran well again in her next start when pushing through between horses at midstetch and getting closed down late; might be in line for a better trip here after chasing a fast pace and tired last time. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

3:10 WO 5th SOUPER RUSH (#4, 9-2) lost all chance after a troubled break when coming off the sidelines in an OS stakes for 3yos on the inner turf Aug. 12. He's moving out to a more suitable distance in this 6 1/2-furlong Tapeta sprint for non-winners of two, and resides in a barn that's been heating up. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

3:10 CBY 3rd WILDWOOD MAGGIE (#6, 9-2) goes from an 8% barn to team Broberg who are 32% at the current meet. The blinkers go ON and that is a 21% move for this barn. Race flow is more than fine as we spy two speed horses along with two horses that are going sprint to route. Quinonez gets a leg up and is 3 for 5 for this barn. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

3:21 SAR 5th EXULT (#5, 12-1) is one of five exiting that 7/30 race for the condition going a bit linger; that race came down to a bunched finish as everyone tried to close in on tired leaders late. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

3:40 CBY 4th CHASE THE CHAOS (#1, 6-1) is by a 19% debut sire and a 12% debut turf sire (debut sire stat are for 2YO's only while debut turf stat is for all debut turf starts). His dam went 7-1-1-0 and earned 16K (0 for 1 on the sod). This is dam's first foal. Turf and distance Tomlinsons are quite good at 356 and 359. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

4:07 MTH 9th ROYAL COUP (#4, 20-1) was caught too far off the controlled pace in that optional claimer last time and that cost him, as STEFANO was able to wire the field after he was unpressured from the start; this gelding has more speed than he showed there and should be expected to be more involved in the early stages of this Charles Hesse III Handicap. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

4:29 SAR 7th WEEKEND FUN (#9, 10-1) faced a better field of open $32k claimers last time and finished gamely through some traffic while winding up a close 4th; back relatively quickly dropping slightly and adding blinkers. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

4:33 LAD 2nd CONFESS (#5, 7-2) cuts back to an elongated sprint and that is the distance he won at only two back. He draws fine and has some tactical speed to help with his trip. Honestly, all of these should get a good trip as this is only a six horse field. We think this gelding got a taste of winning two back (in his 17th start) and liked it. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

4:45 GG 1st It's been 26 months since BREAKFAST BALL (#5, 6-1) won a $25,000 claimer for maidens at 1 1-16 miles on turf at Golden Gate Fields. She is winless in nine starts since then, but has a chance for a second victory in this small field of $12,500 claimers at a mile on turf. The race shape could be ideal for Breakfast Ball, who should have a pace to follow from top contender APPLAUD THE BENCH as well as Sound of the Surf and perhaps Lyinatthebar. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race

4:47 WO 8th TRICK AND TREAT (#6, 10-1) is exiting tough maiden special company and is probably taking a drop in class to this lucrative yearling sales stakes. The nicely-bred daughter of Practical Joke and stakes winner Silent Treat could mow down all the speed in this 6 1/2-furlong sprint with Declan Carroll taking over for a live barn. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

5:01 LAD 3rd B B GUN BULLSEYE (#6, 8-1) is by a 8% debut turf sire. Her dam went 19-7-3-1 and earned 165K on the sod. Two of four sibs won on the green. This filly has improved her Beyer in every start and now goes third off the layoff. Second time with this jock can only help plus she gets in light. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

5:05 SAR 8th EMBOITE (#5, 20-1) has much to prove stepping into stakes company for the first time; didn't mind either of his first two starts going shorter in races separated by a layoff, though he didn't look like a sprinter; has improved since stretching out and he had a no-chance trip in that last one; think he can outrun his odds. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

5:30 DMR 2nd STAY HAPPY (#4, 5-2), a 7-for-17 pro, can win this $10k claiming sprint. He cruised by more than two lengths the last time he ran at this level in May at Santa Anita, then regressed two starts after. Claimed last out, he posted three sharp recent works and figures for an up-front trip in a sprint light on speed. Long gone. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race

5:40 CBY 8th MO SMOKING (#2, 15-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race

6:10 CBY 9th HOLDENTIGHT (#5, 12-1) is bred to love a turf sprint. He tried the turf for the first time last out and finished second to last but did have some trouble. Plus, we can forgive any horse the first time he does anything. We think the cut back to a sprint is key as is the leading rider getting a leg up. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

6:22 LAD 6th Not sure how FOLLOW THE SAINT (#3, 6-1) is going to trip out in this race as there is a lot of pace signed on. Except in her debut, she has found the front end at the first call in all of her starts. Let's see if she can be the speed of the speed in this heat. This barn is 25% turf to dirt. The blinkers go ON which helps with theft plans. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

8:17 GG 8th PROOF HE RIDES (#2, 6-1) was outstanding in his lone start on the synthetic track in June, but a poor eighth as the 2-1 favorite in an allowance race at Pleasanton on July 1. Proof He Rides has worked quickly for this race, and figures to be well-placed behind a few speedy rivals through the opening quarter-mile. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race
