DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, April 23, 2023
Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook; something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day's action.
12:40 GP 1st CONTINUE APACE (#5, 6-1) didn't get beat by much in his debut going this distance in Ireland and will appreciate the move back to a turf sprint after coming up empty going around two turns on Tapeta in his first start in North America. Winner of his debut remained undefeated in four starts when he repeated in a $111,600K stakes at York. His sibs are mostly sprinters so this is what he probably wants to do. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:00 KEE 1st ROGUE ELEMENT (#2, 12-1) was on turf, synthetic, or sloppy dirt in his last eight starts. Some of them were all right but this horse might prefer a fast dirt track. He closed into a moderate pace and won a maiden race going this trip last Keeneland meet and stands a solid chance of outrunning his odds. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:20 AQU 1st SHEA ON A MISSION (#7, 10-1) faced a much stronger field of open claimers when back from the layoff last time and never landed a blow; ran well enough to be a factor here in her two career wins and she was also dropping in class both times; threat to improve at a price second off the bench. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:32 KEE 2nd RAPUNZELS SONG (#10, 15-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Marcus Hersh). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:53 AQU 2nd ACADEMY CHOICE (#6 8-1) is by a sire who got off to a good start with his initial crop last year, particularly on turf (16% with first-time starters); dam has dropped four turf winners so far, including the talented NY-bred Morrison, who won his debut by the length of the stretch in a race rained off the grass; some appeal and likely to be a fair price. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:10 OP 2nd MOLIERE (#7, 9-2) has been a popular claim and that makes him appealing. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:18 TAM 4th HENRY'S WORLD (#4, 20-1) has high speed and will be out there winging it early in his first start since early February; he had been racing on the synthetic strip prior to the break but he does seem to be at his best on the grass, and he should appreciate this return to the green, where he has registered five of his seven career wins. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:36 KEE 4th OLLIEMYBOY (#3, 8-1) back from a long layoff and in a new barn was a curious entrant in a tough March 2 Fair Grounds race with multiple high-end allowance conditions and an $80,000 claiming option. Didn't expect him to contend, and he didn't, but this looks like a much better spot, with easier competition and that comeback race behind him. Has plenty of old races that would win this, and while the price probably is lower than published odds, he still could be value. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:44 OP 3rd GRAYDAWN DAY (#4, 10-1) owns a series of competitive Beyer Speed Figures. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:49 TAM 5th LIVELY REMARK (#7, 8-1) hasn't run on the dirt since January, and that was prior to her racing with Lasix; she earned a decent figure in that loss but she has room to improve today, as she has been running well in defeat of late on the grass. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:08 KEE 5th You nearly never get any sort of price on Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz, especially in a turf race -- will LAKOTA SPIRIT (#12, 8-1) really be as high as 8-1? Possibly not, but still think her price will be fair, and I'll live with post 12 if that's the case. She was fastest home, really buzzing through the final half-furlong, rallying from the rear clearing maiden ranks in her turf debut. Jumped from there to the Wild Applause, her tactics changed 180 degrees, the filly sent to challenge the favorite on the lead as her stablemate swept to victory. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:32 AQU 5th SUPER ROCKER (#5, 15-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
5:42 AQU 9th RED D G P (#6, 8-1) ran pretty well while forced to chase a quick rival (who turned out to be pretty good) and hanging in there despite being bothered late in his debut at this level; drops back down and cuts back to sprint after facing tougher in his first two starts this year. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
6:50 GG 5th LMLOOKNFORMISCHIEF (#6, 8-1) comes here in decent form and his closing style might play well here as there are at least a couple speed-types in here to give him the type of sharp, contested pace that will boost his late kick. He's drawn outside where he can stay in the clear. -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
7:42 GG 7th LUCKY LAD (#7, 6-1) didn't do much in his first 2 starts vs. winners but his 3 since all came at this level and he fared much better. His speed can have him in it from the start and if anything he seems to be getting better. -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
8:07 SA 9th This N2L claiming route is a good spot to take a shot with BIG SWEDE (#1, 5-1), runner-up at this level three back before tailing off his next pair. Claimed two back, he takes off blinkers, gets a weight break with 10-pound apprentice Carlos Barbosa, and should be forwardly placed saving ground. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
