DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, October 7, 2023
?q=100)
Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.
12:35 BAQ 2nd SOUTH STREET (#2, 10-1) dropped in class at Saratoga and did not run well as the favorite after getting caught wide chasing a solid pace; has better races than that to get to as he moves back into a protected spot off the claim. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets
12:57 LRL 2nd LOVING CUP (#2, 6-1) looked good taking an off-turf sprint at Pimlico. Eased off the rail to stalk outside, made a three-four wide bid into the stretch, and was too good for that group. Barn went 6 for the last 17 (35%, $3.33 ROI). This is a tougher spot, however, and she'll need a setup from the back of the pack. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:28 LRL 3rd WARIDI CANDY (#3, 10-1) took a step forward in second start with blinkers. Tracked a 13-1 shot (finished last) through moderate fractions, took over turning into the stretch, then tried hard for second behind the favored Gulfstream invader. That tactical speed should serve her well. Barn went 4 for the last 17 (24%, $3.37 ROI) with horses going third after layoffs between two and four months. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets
1:32 KEE 2nd PERFECT PRANKSTER (#12, 15-1) has been posting lively drills over the TP Tapeta for career debut, and don't at all mind post 12 for a firster in a sprint provided the horse has some speed. Dam could run fast on dirt (this her second foal to race) and sire is a robust 18% with 2yo first-timers. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets
2:04 KEE 3rd RAGGITY SAND (#3, 20-1) lost her form after a solid comeback run at Fair Grounds, and the Kentucky Downs comeback start last time, likely meant mainly to set her up for this dirt race, increases her price. Seems like a wide open older maiden. N Pessin-trained longshots often competitive on KEE dirt. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:03 LRL 6th BILL OF RIGHTS (#10, 12-1) was knocked sideways at the start at Pimlico, raced outside at the back behind a quickening pace, split rivals in upper stretch before altering course to the outside, then got up for third in the late stages. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:16 BAQ 7th APROPOS (#7, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Bet this race with DRF Bets
3:35 LRL 7th CHEERS FOR KITTEN (#6, 6-1) dueled for the lead inside of 7-2 shot Grab the Gold (finished third), shook loose of that foe in upper stretch, then held the even-money chalk safe in the final sixteenth. This guy would appreciate some give in the ground, but he's also sharp and should be in the thick of things from the opening bell. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:04 WO 6th LUNCH WITH BERNIE (#5, 6-1) raced wide throughout while closing mildly for fourth over a track that aided speed and inside runners when moving out to a route in her deceptively good last start. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets
4:53 BAQ 10th CAPONE (#6, 15-1) held some potential early last year after improving quickly from his debut appearance; was first back from a long layoff last time when chasing right from the start and getting tired, though he didn't give way in that spot; can find the needed improvement in his second start for Dutrow. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets
5:08 WO 8th HURRICANE GIZMO (#3, 6-1) lacked room late on the turn and early in the stretch before rallying for a narrow loss when descending to this level on the Tapeta three weeks ago. The daughter of Giant Gizmo is bred to run on and is out of a turf winner. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets
5:17 GP 10th SHE LOVES TO MOVE (#4, 6-1) debuts in relatively soft spot and showing enough promise in a.m. to merit a look at a fair price. Hopefully will relish the synthetic. -Mike Welsch | Bet this race with DRF Bets
5:20 FNO 2nd In a field of six $4,000 claimers that lack consistency, LUCY L (#5, 8-1) should benefit from a return to the Northern California circuit after finishing ninth and sixth in higher-priced claiming races at a mile at Del Mar. Lucy L, who tends to run from a stalking position, won as recently as June in a $12,500 claimer at a mile at Santa Anita when trained by Tim Yakteen. -Steve Andersen | Bet this race with DRF Bets
5:24 BAQ 11th MISCREANT (#3, 12-1) is a maiden on the grass after five starts, though she has run well on this surface without winning; git shuffled back around the final turn to wind up last when back to turf in that last one, and she put in a good finish in that race despite having little chance to catch. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets
6:10 WO 10th NO MORE DIAMONDS (#10, 6-1) mounted a mild wide bid to end up fourth among two next-out winner over a track that favored speed and inside horses Sept. 9. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets
7:53 MED 3rd KBCYA LATER (#10, 10-1) was forced to try to rate off the leaders in that pace-filled sprint last time and he weakened late but he figures to be on the lead tonight despite his outermost post; will be tough to reel in if he can establish a clear lead in the opening stages. -Kenny Peck | Bet this race with DRF Bets
8:00 HST 7th In the nightcap, I'm going to head to CARLA'S HONOR (#2, 5-1). I think that there will be enough of a pace on up front to suit her stalking style and rider Sivino Morales sticks with her despite having other options. Top contestant. -Lisa Russell | Bet this race with DRF Bets
8:20 MED 4th DUBBY DUBBIE (#3, 10-1) has the tactical speed to stay close and that should prove to be an edge in this route, which is otherwise light on pace; he may get first run at expected pacesetter BEACH WARRIOR, who stretches out from sprints, and he could inherit the lead off the turn if that rival is unable to last. -Kenny Peck | Bet this race with DRF Bets
8:47 MED 5th GONNA BE EPIC (#8, 10-1) was on the main track in his last two and he was against the race flow in both of those races; back on the turf and eligible to make the last run if he gets enough pace up front, and a clean trip. -Kenny Peck | Bet this race with DRF Bets
10:55 RP 7th SHANNON C (#3, 7-2) moves back to dirt and he's had the bulk of his success on the main track. As for the race he exits, note the winner was to have run back earlier on the card. The horses come out of the Remington Park Turf Sprint, a quick race in which SHANNON C was making his first start since May. -Mary Rampellini | Bet this race with DRF Bets
