DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, October 16, 2021

DRF Staff|Oct 15, 2021
Pens Street (9) wins a Sept. 18 maiden race at Gulfstream Park
Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos Pens Street (outside) wins a Gulfstream Park maiden race in 2020. She will face easier company Friday than she did in her most recent race at Monmouth Park.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:22 GP 2nd BELLA ROMANCE (#1, 6-1) turned in one of the more notable form reversals in recent memory winning off by 6 widening lengths at second asking after getting beat 96 lengths by not a whole lot better in debut. Not sure which one shows up here but repeat of last makes this one wire to wire threat once again. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

2:20 LRL 4th BOURBON WILDCAT (#2, 6-1) won the only time she ran on turf, and comes into this off a narrow loss at his level on the main track. She has speed, but can stalk, and could get up in time if things fall her way. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race

3:00 GP 5th KICKS ON SIXTY SIX (#4, 5-1) drops to bottom, shortens up in distance, returns to main, may come running late to run down the speed in totally wide open bottom level conditioned claimer. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

3:00 WO 5th CALL HER JOEY (#4, 8-1) raced wide all the way when fifth behind a sharp dropper last time vs. $25K NW3 stock on the main turf. She should take some beating in this $15K NW3 mile on the inner turf if she fires one of her better shots. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

3:30 GP 6th YELLEN (#6, 10-1) already has a win on the synthetics and worked well enough over this surface earlier in the week to merit top billing at what could be a bit of a price. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

3:30 WO 6th DEMOGORGON (#12, 6-1) made a three-wide bid to the lead in the stretch before weakening to third in her 6 1/2-furlong opener. The towering bay should be dangerous with the addition of Lasix in this shorter OS/$40K maiden sprint. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

3:55 LRL 7th WHAT A TRICK (#6, 6-1) wants to be involved early and was taken out of her game when she broke a couple of steps slow in her latest and she did not seem very happy when Ferrer tried to rate her. She finished second to subsequent Grade 3 winner Bye Bye earlier this year and could be tough to reel in if she gets her head in front early. She will have to deal with other speed, though. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race

4:00 WO 7th RAPPER ZAPPER (#9, 8-1) improved to third after a three-wide stalking trip in a slow-paced inner turf route last time in his second trip postward. Kimura takes over on the promising Stronach homebred. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

4:02 GP 7th CONVERTER (#2, 10-1) and KICK IN THE GAS (#5, 15-1) a couple of potential bombers in a tough one out of the mile chute. Former drops to weakest level yet, goes turf to dirt, has shown promise vs. better on occasion. Kick in the Gas' lone main track outing resulted in runaway 12 length win over muddy surface back in July and the victim of trouble in both subsequent outings on turf. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

4:30 WO 8th MARITIME MISSION (#5, 12-1) had traffic problems last time after an awkward break, and was softened up in a speed duel the start before. He could make some noise as a longshot here with Hernandez taking over from Wilson, who's riding in a G1 stakes at Keeneland on Saturday. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

8:35 RP 2nd EASILYUNBRIDLED (#8, 4-1) cuts back to one turn after showing speed around two, and that can be an effective move with a horse. He's also back on dirt, site of his last win. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

10:27 RP 6th MADAM PIE (#11, 9-2) hooked a blowout winner last time. She moves back to turf here and she's put up her best Beyer Speed Figures on the lawn. MADAM PIE also makes her second start since May. The drawback is the wide post. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

11:23 RP 8th BOTTOMSUPBELLE (#8, 6-1) is appealing for her racing experience. She also has speed and draws a post that might give Eramia options. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

11:51 RP 9th ROYAL BERTRANDO (#10, 5-1) has speed and an outside post that might give Goncalves options. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race
