DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, May 28, 2022

DRF Staff|May 27, 2022
Monmouth scenic
Emily Shields Two-year-old fillies will stretch out to a two-turn mile in Monday's $200,000 Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:05 GP 1st TAX CODE (#11, 10-1) was well meant in his debut at Tampa but did not get the bst of trips now switches to grass, stretches out, deserves a second chance in this category if able to work out a trip from extreme outside post. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:18 PIM 2ndWish there was more turf pedigree in the female family, but SHINY PENNY (#9, 20-1) is by the good grass stallion Goldencents (15% turf-sprint winners compared to 12% industry average), and was taken out of her last race by a hot barn (Sillaman scored with newly-claimed runners Jimmy the Kid on May 13 and Ghost Stalker on May 14). -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:15 PIM 4th Although DOC ROCK (#11, 6-1) finished last in his debut, think he gained quite the education. Off slow and pinched at the start, he prompted a five-ply pace while three wide and in between. Rated back on the turn to avoid the tight duel, he dropped inside and gave an even finish. Curious to see what kind of trip he can work out with all that experience under his girth. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:35 MTH 6th IRISH MEADOW (#4, 8-1) was well off the board in the Reilly, against statebreds, but he was moving extremely well in the back of the field, and while he was no threat to the top three he closed well along the inside and he galloped out nicely past the wire; now goes longer and figures to improve, as he does seem to be at his best going two turns. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:14 PIM 6th CROSSLAND (#11, 6-1) showed fresh speed in first start following 156-day layoff, pressed 5-1 shot Grand Manner (finished seventh), took over the lead turning for home and couldn't fend off the late runners in the stretch. It was a good way to kick off his 3-year-old campaign and he should show early foot in this spot as well. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:25 WO 5th LOBBY BAR (#4, 8-1) has been working right along and is from the family of speedy stakes winners Grand Bili and Woodsmoke, along with Queen's Plate victor Woodcarver. His trainer was 1 for 6 with first-timers during the past five years ($3.96 ROI). -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:31 MTH 8th CUSTOM BOBBY'S (#2, 5-1) usually turfs, and it was over the grass that he posted his lone career win, but he has run well on the dirt in the past, including his most recent try, in March; the Beyer he posted there fits nicely with the locals and he'll be a threat here if he can run back to that figure in his first start for trainer Jose Camejo, who wins at 32% with new faces. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:45 GP 6th MAI TY ONE ON (#7, 9-2) a popular winner off the claim making just second start of current form cycle, may have yet another forward move in him, could prove bit of a sleeper if he does despite the hike. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:15 PIM 8th MEJORAMIGA (#5, 10-1) likely gained needed fitness in first start following 196 days away from the races. Didn't have the proper race flow as favored Icy Reply shook loose on manageable fractions, but finished evenly after altering out widest turning for home. There's some size to this filly so think she has enough pedigree and body type stretching out in the second start of the year. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:27 WO 7th GIANT ILLUSION (#4, 6-1) battled up front with two others in the two-path before finishing a lapped-on third over an outside-biased track against easier in her comeback. She could make all the running with that tightener under her girth. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:47 GP 8th BORU (#7, 6-1) was forwardly placed before fading latter stages in a race that absolutely collapsed at the end, dueled Gemonteer through much of stretch with the latter returning to beat same kind off that effort. Gets shaky nod off that try. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:55 MTH 11th KENTUCKY GHOST (#3, 8-1) was distanced and vanned off when last seen, in the Grade 1 Turf Classic on the Kentucky Derby undercard, but he returned to post a nice work 10 days later and he's entered right back here for trainer Victoria Oliver; this gelding is a stone closer reliant on pace but he should get a very favorable race flow in this Cliff Hanger, which features a good amount of speed, and he may be able to get up in time if he gets a clean trip. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:30 HST 2nd ACE DEUCE (#4, 7-2) ran okay sprinting in his first start this year and considering he is a seven-time winner at the distance, he is going to appreciate the added yardage. Adding to his appeal are the strong stats Heads has with horses making their second start following a layoff of 180 days: 35% with a $2.58 ROI the past two years. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:33 LAD 7th GOLD INCLUDED (#3, 12-1) goes second time this sod while most recent a solid third. This mare is just better on the green. She should be fully acclimated now. She draws fine and gets good race flow all at a nice price. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:10 CBY 1st DYNAMIC RULER (#5, 5-1) didn't care for the grass previously but that is fine as he isn't bred to like it. One of two in here for this barn and we bet this gelding is the better price. He might own a pace advantage and has run well off a layoff before. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:21 GP 11th SHIVAREE (#3, 12-1) gets a set of blinkers and a field that figures to provide him with plenty of pace to run at through the lane. May prove worth a look at a relatively square price. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:10 CBY 5th B J'S SPIRIT (#1, 6-1) is a proven turf runner that has some speed and draws inside. Full field helps all exotics. We see value if this filly is near 6-1 morning line and we like Wade up. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:40 CBY 6th SECOND GRACE (#1, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:10 MED (Harness) 3rd SOMEBADDUDE (#2, 4-1) had no shot last time from post 8 at Freehold and was up against it versus much better in his prior outings. If he’s got a big mile in the tank this year we’ll see it tonight. – Derick Giwner | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:45 WBS (Harness) 6th CHIKABOOM (#3, 3-1) gets a key driver change tonight to Bob McClure who won twice with him last and he should get an aggressive steer in this spot; top call. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
