DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, May 16, 2020

With most other North American sports being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, we hope the sport of horse racing can entertain you during these trying times. Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.
12:35 TAM 1st TIME SHIFT (#5, 20-1) might be the right value play in the opener, which seems to be ripe for a longshot. She removes the blinkers for trainer Anthony Ferraro, who has a couple of recent wins with that angle, yet with some urging early on she could be the main speed in a race that appears to be light on pace; worth a shot at what should be a big price. -Kenny Peck
1:08 TAM 2nd BOK CHOY (#4, 8-1) is kin to seven winners, including 10-time winner Tour for Love, but the appeal here lies in the works, especially that last pair of breezes, which strongly hint at some ability; may be overlooked some in the wagering vs. Clemente firster Hot Mist and perhaps the right play at the expected solid price. -Kenny Peck
1:15 GP 2nd SPICY NELLY (#1, 8-1) can be closer to the pace than she found herself last time, when she closed from 12th for second by a neck. She was shortening up in distance for the race and this time around moves out to a mile and a sixteenth. The runner that defeated her has drawn far outside for the rematch, while Spicy Nelly also owns one of the field's best last-race Beyer Speed Figures. -Mary Rampellini
1:15 GP 2nd DESCENTE (#14, 5-2) the lone main track entry in this lineup and as such may find herself in a good spot should this one switch off the turf despite class hike in her present form. -Mike Welsch
1:45 GP 3rd SLINGIN SAMMY B (#3, 5-1) comes off a troubled start and the out was her first in two months. She has reason to move forward in her second start back and also gets the services of a journeyman in Irad Ortiz. -Mary Rampellini

2:32 CD 4th FASHION FAUX PAS (#3, 10-1) has been off since Sept. 21, 2019, which is nothing compared to the odds-on favorite here, Monomoy Girl, who trained at various times throughout 2019 without starting and was somewhat slow to hit the worktab this winter at FG considering when she came back to the track, FFP fell apart after her big Delaware dirt win, but the barn does very well with layoff horses and she could be set for a good one fresh. – Marcus Hersh
2:46 GP 5th JADES GELLY (#1, 8-1) looks like a candidate to wire the field. She won a maiden sprint last out in super-quick time and now stretches out to two turns. She gets pedigree support for the task at hand. -Mary Rampellini
2:46 GP 5th Lots of intriguing possibilities at press time with status of race, turf or dirt, unknown. If switched to main track, GLASS CEILING (#14, 7-2) and MONEY NEVER SLEEPS (#16, 3-1) should prove major players. Former down from N Y but working well for local bow, earned high marks beating starter company last time. Money Never Sleeps also entered Friday in the stakes, better suited to this spot if she gets in due to surface change. -Mike Welsch
3:43 TAM 7th FEETS OF FEATHER (#5, 8-1) hasn't raced on the turf in over a year despite a solid try in his first and only try on this surface, when he closed nicely to miss by just a half-length; new trainer Nick Caruso wins at a high rate with private acquisitions as well as well horses off this type of break, and has scored wit two of his last six runners switching from dirt to turf. -Kenny Peck
4:21 GP 8th EDGE OF FIRE (#2, 3-1) the best closer in a field featuring plenty of speed. Turned in big effort after making bit of a premature move stretching to mile for the first time on 3/27 when readily run down by Pletcher's promising and undefeated Money Moves. -Mike Welsch
4:33 SA 3rd AFFIANCED (#3, 4-1) finished an even-paced third in her debut. Not great, not bad. She trained very well going into that race, and is likely to improve with a race under her belt. -Brad Free

4:33 SA 3rd MOONHALL MILLY (#9, 6-1) beat 15 and was closing on top two debuting 9/7/19 in a straight-course 5f maiden at Navan, a race that has worked out to be pretty decent. Easily the fastest finisher in her US debut, quickly galloping out past the only horse to beat her. Video of May 7 breeze shows a turf horse working on dirt – but still liked it, and she has filled out nicely since Ireland. – Marcus Hersh
4:47 TAM 9th HANIEL (#8, 9-2) was moving well through the lane in that last one, when a close-up 4th against allowance runners, and given a better set up she's capable of making the last run; also like the fact that she's back at her preferred distance, as her latest may have been too short and the 11 furlongs she tried two back was likely too far. -Kenny Peck
5:04 SA 4th Lightly raced and improving each start, JUSTINIAN (#3, 4-1) can win this allowance mile. He has improved since stretching out, including a game N2X win last out. He broke slowly, sped to the lead, was hounded through fast fractions, shook off a pace rival, and held sway over a rival that rallied from last. Big win by a promising colt in just his sixth start. -Brad Free
5:44 CD 10th PORTRAIT (#2, 4-1) has been asking for a cutback from two turns to one and gets it here. Beaten by a nice little filly last time. Some concern she gets bet down below fair value. – Marcus Hersh
5:55 GP 11th STORM THE BRIDGE (#10, 2-1) hard used disputing pace with ultimate winner when trying this distance for first time in his latest, should be able to relax a little better on front end if away cleanly from outside gate. -Mike Welsch
6:37 SA 7th The class barrier from N1X to N2X is daunting for a turf miler, but lightly filly SHE'S OUR CHARM (#2, 4-1) and improving older mare DESERT OASIS (#5, 4-1) nonetheless are the choices based on big recent wins. The well-bred SHE'S OUR CHARM was particularly impressive. She sped to the lead, set blazing fractions (:45.47 and 1:09.77, second-fastest of meet), and held sway. Big win by the Candy Ride filly who is the first runner produced by two-time stakes winner Charm the Maker. No telling how good this filly will be. But she must hold off the stretch rally of DESERT OASIS, who also won a N1X despite trouble early in the race. -Brad Free
7:38 SA 9th CAPITAL CALL (#8, 8-1) made a smart midrace move here Jan. 25 but was no match for a big winner, then showed speed and faltered here Feb. 28. He may not have enjoyed being inside. He’s outside this time, shortens up, has the blinkers removed and has worked well. – Michael Hammersly
7:38 SA 9th LEMONADE STAND (#6, 6-1) could be a bigger price than the listed odds, couldn’t she? 1st-time starter sister to G2 turf-stakes winner Kitten’s Roar & Be My Baby, who won a Gulfstream turf-route MSW in her career debut. Not much to see in two workout videos available (she breezed in blinkers) but won’t hold dirt drills against her. Yakteen has a big stat here: 1st-timers in turf-route MSWs last 5 years: 9-4-0-0 $8.41 ROI, and Prat rode two of those winners. – Marcus Hersh
