DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, March 2, 2024

DRF Staff|Mar 01, 2024
Gulfstream Park racing
Ronnie Betor First post for Gulfstream racing is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. ET on Saturday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

11:15 GP 1st GOT SUNNY (#3, 15-1) caught a pretty salty bunch in his debut considering the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th place finishers all returned to win their next starts. This guy was taken back early and angled about 10 wide into the stretch, never really have much chance to make an impact. Should benefit from the outing. Kin to graded turf SW Poppy Flower. -Mike Welsch

1:25 LRL 3rd ROCK BULLET (#6, 9-2) has exceeded the Beyer par for this level in each of his last nine starts while racing on turf and Tapeta at Woodbine. Settled midpack in between rivals behind a quick pace over a closer-friendly track on 12/16, saved ground on the backstretch and into the second turn, eased out a couple of times in the stretch, then finished evenly for fourth. Plenty of turf in the pedigree, but he is a half-brother to a runner that won four in a row on dirt after switching from synthetic to dirt. -Dan Illman

2:08 TAM 4th CHRIS'S MOTOWN GAL (#7, 3-1) broke her maiden three back with a figure that makes her a threat here, and though she failed to run back to that Beyer in her two starts vs. winners she s easily forgiven for the failed route try two back, and she was against a speed-favoring race flow in her latest; can make the last run given a quick, contested pace up front. -Kenny Peck

2:45 GP 8th TIME TO DAZZLE (#9, 15-1) worth another look after suffering through brutal trip last time. Continues to train extremely well over the Tapeta. May offer some value with a clean run this time around. -Mike Welsch

3:01 AQU 5th FULL MOON FEVER (#9, 10-1) went overlooked in the first start back from the long layoff and ran a pretty big race to nearly pull off the upset despite a tough trip; was in good form over this track early last year before tailing off in the summer and then getting a break; dangerous with his good race as he drops slightly again. -Mike Beer

3:07 TAM 6th In his latest, ESTILO MAGICO (#6, 4-1) didn't run to that strong Beyer he posted in that win two back, which was especially impressive in that he seemed to overcome a speed bias to win it, but perhaps he was simply in too deep; tactical speed should ensure good positioning. -Kenny Peck

3:10 OP 4th ETHEREAL ROAD (#4, 9-2) earned a strong Beyer Speed Figure last out for his fourth-place finish to Magic Tap, who came back to place in the Grade 3, $600K Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn. -Mary Rampellini

4:08 TAM 8th CATALINA CHARLI (#13, 10-1) is on the Also Eligible list but if she is able to scratch in she has to be considered a big threat for trainer Bill Morey, who wins at 22% with his firsters, including three winners from eight starter with debuting maiden claimers; the dam and her lone foal to start were both winless but this filly does have some breezes that suggest she has some speed. -Kenny Peck

4:34 AQU 8th Nine furlongs is probably pushing the limits of distance for DOUBLE CROWN (#3, 8-1) but he ran an excellent race last time when keeping close to a fast pace and just getting nailed by a rail-running closer late; recent form over fast dirt is solid and he has already proven capable of bringing his good race to NY; like him cutting back for this and catching one of his main rivals off the layoff helps. -Mike Beer

4:39 TAM 9th ALWAYS ROYAL (#9, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck).

4:43 OP 7th KING PEANUT (#8, 8-1) is one of two stakes winners in the Nodouble and his score came at this six furlong trip in last season's Rainbow. He might be sitting on a peak race here, in his third start since May. -Mary Rampellini

4:53 GP 12th SARATOGA FLASH (#1, 15-1) another with a likely pace edge in wide open field on grass. Ran huge number when loose on easy win last summer at Kentucky Downs. Might be long gone if away clean from the hedge. -Mike Welsch

5:06 AQU 9th STAGE LEFT (#7, 12-1) probably isn't a true graded stakes-quality sprinter but he has already held his own with his main rivals in this Grade 3 field; was forced to chase that fast Gravesend pace two back when in the photo for placings with DURANTE and ROTKNEE, but might not have to do that dirty work this time; don't think he wants seven furlongs, and he had little chance in that slow-paced Toboggan last time, anyway; taking him at a price in a race where he might pull a better trip. -Mike Beer

5:15 OP 8th AWESOME ROAD (#3, 9-2) is one of three Triple Crown nominees in the field. He is moving back into the overnight ranks off a trio of stakes starts and will be first Lasix. -Mary Rampellini

5:23 GP 13th FOR THE FLAG (#7, 8-1) freshened after series of big races to close out abbreviated 2023 campaign. Lightly raced filly getting a bit of a class check here but working well for return, might not look back if ready for best off the extended layoff. -Mike Welsch

5:50 OP 9th SUMMER SHOES (#6, 15-1) won last year's Downthedustyroad over some of these. For this year's renewal, she shows a smart five-eighths work from the gate. -Mary Rampellini

7:54 GG 8th MAX'S MAXINE (#4, 6-1) was a good second despite an eventful trip in a $12,500 claimer for maidens at six furlongs on Feb. 11 and can play a key role in this race at the same level. Max's Maxine had a troubled start in the Feb. 11 which led to him closing from last of six to lead briefly before finishing second by three-quarters of a length. -Steve Andersen
