DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, March 13, 2021

DRF Staff|Mar 12, 2021
Tampa Bay Downs, January 2011
Tom Cooley On Saturday, Jan. 25, Tampa Bay Downs handled a staggering $6.2 million.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:17 TAM 1st REACTION TIME (#6, 8-1) has a chance to steal this if he’s able to shake loose in the opening stages, as expected, as he comes out of sprints and he lands in a race that’s apparently light on early zip; barn’s recent record with horses going from sprints to routes certainly adds to the appeal, as trainer Robert Smith has won with three of his last five runners under those circumstances. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

12:39 GP 2nd KIRBY (#1, 8-1) ran well behind 8-5 Say Cheese last time and might have enough speed to lead these a merry chase if aggressively handled, put right on the front end from her inside post. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

12:47 TAM 2nd TWIN VALOR (#5, 12-1) has been running against open claimers, and though he finished off the board in his first two starts after the December claim one was a route and he had some trouble at the start in his latest. He impressed in that win in his first start off the short rest and he encountered a good deal of trouble in his return, a race that’s especially easy to forgive, but he can surprise here at a square price with a clean trip, as there’s plenty of speed to set him up. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:15 TAM 3rd SIX CIDER (#5, 6-1) will need to stay closer to the pace than he did in his last couple of starts, as there’s not a great deal of speed in this field, but he is capable of that given a clean start, something he hasn’t gotten in a couple of his recent tries; that wasn’t an issue in his latest but the wide draw and the tough competition was, and he can be expected to improve off that effort on the class drop today. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:20 AQU 2nd LOVE ME TOMORROW (#4, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:37 GP 4th YITO MACHINE (#1, 6-1) bet to 4-1 at first asking but never got a call following tardy beginning. Claimed out of the race, been away a long time, returns for half the price sporting several grass works and one promising looking main track drill from the gate. Might fit nicely with this kind. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:36 GP 6th LEN LO LADY (#6, 4-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Welsch). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:50 AQU 5th BRUSH COUNTRY (#5, 10-1) won his first start off the claim for his previous connections, who took him following a string of solid efforts, then saw his form quickly head the wrong way through the end of 2020; gets a change of scenery for this after being taken by new connections last time and he has the back races to be tough in here if ready to bounce back right away. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:36 OP 6th ASHAAR (#1, 9-2) might prove to be the controlling speed in this spot. He is making his two-turn debut after setting the pace at a one-turn mile configuration last out at Gulfstream Park. The fifth-place finisher from that race, Summer Kid, came back in his next start to win a first-level allowance at GP with a Beyer of 85 and the seventh-place finisher, Don Bourbon, another first-level allowance, at Tampa, with a Beyer of 80. On a pedigree point, ASHAAR is a half-brother to a pair of stakes winners, including Group 2 winner Mendip ($895K). -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:41 OP 8th ROYAL DAAHER (#3, 9-2) was favored at this level last time and beaten less than a length for everything after a less than ideal trip. The race also went in good time. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:53 TAM 10th HARD KNOCKING (#4, 10-1) exits a race that featured a good amount of speed and set up for the closers (note the bold “C” in DRF pp’s), and though he weakened in the late stages he did push the tempo from the start; this finale seems to present a much different pace scenario, and he could well be the controlling speed. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:55 AQU 9th KANSAS KIS (#1, 8-1) has disappointed in two straight at short prices, though both of those races were over a mile, and there is an argument to be made that she is much better sprinting - her excellent second in the Busher last year notwithstanding; took a step forward when scoring off the layoff going shorter and cutting back for this might lead to another step forward at a fair price. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:13 OP 9th PLAINSMAN (#4, 9-2) gets a distance test in the Temperence Hill, as these go a mile and a half. He registered his biggest career win over a mile and an eighth, in the Grade 3 Discover at Aqu. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:50 GP 12th GUACO (#11, 8-1) ran big race behind 6/5 All Good when stretching back around two turns for first time in quite a while, succumbing grudgingly at the end after attending honest pace. Turns back a sixteenth, similar effort might be good enough to take the nightcap. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
