DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, June 18, 2022

DRF Staff|Jun 17, 2022
Turf racing at Monmouth Park, July 2020
Bill Denver/Equi-Photo One of the issues yet to be resolved with fixed-odds betting is how to handle wagers when a race is switched from turf to dirt resulting in multiple scratches.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:10 WO 1st HIGHLAND SOCIETY (#3, 8-1) brings improving form to this NW2 contest, and might be ready to put it all together in his fourth start off the bench under second-leading rider Stein. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

1:35 GP 3rd DREAM ADRIANNA (#5, 9-2) second best for same tag going a mile, turns back to seven furlongs, taken to rate off what figures to be potential pace duel with AMAZING TRIP and Ninja Abarrio in lineup. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

1:36 MTH 4th Thought TIME GOES FAST (#2, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck). | Get PPs for this race

2:43 WO 4th SMART BIRD (#7, 15-1) has worked okay since her disappointing comeback performance against much tougher, and could get back on the beam in this $25K NW2 event at what figures to be a square price. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

3:16 WO 5th DAWN PHAROAH (#3, 8-1) has worked encouragingly and could take some catching with a clean break in this five-furlong maiden special on the inner turf. The daughter of borderline elite sire American Pharoah is out of a versatile G3-placed dam who produced a placed turf runner. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race

3:24 LRL 6th MOLISE (#2, 6-1) might have been in a bit too tough in turf debut when trying $75,000 maiden claimers at Belmont. Outrun from the start, she swung widest into the stretch and never made an impact. Good to see her back on short notice, and she should perform better at this class level. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

3:41 LAD 3rd MY SISTER ANNETTE (#6, 6-1) should love a turf sprint if her turf and distance Tomlinsons are correct (343 and 337). She exits a key race where 2 of 3 returned to win with figs of 70 and 77. This mare is proven on this sod and keeps Guerrero. We like this outside post. A better break would help (broke last in her most recent). -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

3:44 GP 7th ONE IDENTITY (#5, 6-1) a bit over-matched chasing lightning fast pace in the Musical Romance now back with own kind, might not look back if able to clear off as expected today. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

3:51 MTH 9th DUQUESNE (#12, 10-1) was far back in his last two, both on the dirt, including his return from the layoff last time out, and while that could mean he's badly off form it could also mean he's just looking for turf, and he's back on the grass today; further, he seems well spotted as a horse with a decent late kick, as there's a fair amount of speed to his inside. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

4:27 LS 5th SERBIAN SAILOR (#2, 6-1) was third against steeper last time and owns the field's best last-race Beyer Speed Figure. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

5:19 MTH 12th CYBERVIKING (#1, 8-1) gets tested for class in the Pegasus, which marks only his second career stakes try, but he may well be good enough if he can shake loose from the rail and dictate the tempo, as there's hardly a plethora of speed in this field; he's clearly in good form, having run first or second in all of his last four, and while those were against optional claimers his Beyers fit well enough, and they are still on the rise. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

5:47 MTH 13th EVER DANGEROUS (#5, 6-1) hasn't raced since August but he has done some of his best work when returning from layoffs in the past, and if he's ready off the bench for trainer George Weaver (23% win rate with horses away more than 180 days) he may be the main danger in this Monmouth Stakes. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

5:50 GP 11th JOURNEYMAN (31, 10-1) figures to catch plenty of pace to run at in this lineup, ran huge race over this surface when second best behind classy Wolfie's Dynaghost during heart of Championship meet. Taken to be along with clean sailing. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

6:20 GP 12th BACH (#9, 15-1) has changed hands since last, shortens up to a sprint for first time and should come running late in a field that figures to offer legitimate pace scenario. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

6:40 CBY 2nd NORA'S LEGACY (#6, 5-1) is just better of late. What if she needed her return tries at Will Rogers? What if she didn't care for off tracks there? What we are saying is that the layoff may have helped her. She is a horse for course that has hit the exacta going a flat mile in 4 of 5 starts. Second time Fuentes can only help. State-bred faces open company but this race didn't come up all that tough. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

8:00 HST 7th DRILLER (#2, 7-2) is not as good as he once was but most of his races last year would win this and he could be sitting on a big effort in his second start back after not being able to keep up to significantly tougher in a $35K optional claimer May 21. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race

8:10 CBY 5th DYNAMIC MIMI (#10, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race

8:40 CBY 6th KEEN RESPONSE (#3, 12-1) is by a 5% debut sire. His dam was un-raced. All 5 sibs won with 3 having beat winners. Works are simply great. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

9:10 CBY 7th PINTXOS (#3, 15-1) was stuck in the 11 home in his return try and paid the price. This gelding got a turf Beyer of 77 only three back. Class drop helps as does second off the layoff. Regular rider knows this gelding well and the price will entice. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

7:25 MED (Harness) 4th UPTOWN LADY N (#5, 7-2) returns to the big track at the basement level after a no-shot effort at Pocono from post 8. Mare can toy with this field if on her game. – Derick Giwner | Get PPs for this race

8:40 WBS (Harness) 7th PRETENDER (#7, 6-1) was in a long first-over grind last week that wasn’t the ideal trip. He moves off the tricky rail to the post with the third-highest percentage of trotting winners and trainer Takter excels at peaking her stock for finals; call to upset. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race

9:45 YR (Harness) 9th LIMERENCE (#4, 9-2) takes a second crack against NW5000L5's tonight and has a positive driver switch to Jordan Stratton. – Greg Reinhart | Get PPs for this race
