DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, July 4, 2020

DRF Staff|Jul 03, 2020
Americanus wins a Sept. 28 maiden race at Belmont Park
Barbara D. Livingston Americanus has plenty of time to earn Kentucky Derby points with the race postponed until September.

With most other North American sports being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, we hope the sport of horse racing can entertain you during these trying times. Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:58 GP 3rd UNCORK THE BOTTLE (#1, 7-2) might not have cared for a track rated good in his latest and won’t mind being back on turf where he hasn’t been worse than second in three starts. His race at Tampa two back puts him squarely in the mix and he ran well over this surface the only time he tried it. -Randy Goulding

2:28 GP 6th The 4-time winner LOOKINLIKEAQUEEN (#5, 7-2) only got beat by 2 lengths in her latest despite getting off to a rocky start and having a less than stellar trip from there. She comes back at the same level for Crichton who has solid number with claimed horses running back the first time. -Randy Goulding

2:40 LRL 5th NOMO D’ORO (#6, 9-2) was simply overmatched in local debut on turf and now takes big drop in class to this conditioned nickel claimer. Lone “true” dirt sprint resulted in career debut victory at five furlongs and this will be his first dirt outing while offered for a tag. -Dan Illman

3:00 GP 7th PLUM FUNNY (#3, 4-1) has been working like he can run a bit and being out of Plum Pretty, who won the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks and Grade 1 Apple Blossom, he probably can. The homebred son of Distorted Humor is trained by Ralph Nicks who the past five years has an 18% strike rate and $1.87 ROI with horses debuting in maiden special weight races. -Randy Goulding

3:12 WO 5th MUNNINGS BEACH (#1, 6-1) fought off a challenger for the lead before going on to a daylight maiden victory over 6 1/2 furlongs after a sabbatical June 18. She could strike again in this NW2 tilt in her second try for Barrow. LENCHES GIMME was a hanging second in both of her June starts in shorter sprints at this level. -Ron Gierkink

3:40 LRL 7th SUNRISEBERNSTEINI (#11, 4-1) put it all together in three-race abbreviated campaign in 2019 culminating with a stakes-placing in the All Brandy on August 17. She got a great trip and ride that day as she saved ground in a loose pocket, spurted through along the rail turning into the stretch, made a brief lead in the lane and just couldn’t finish with the two favorites. She won following a 233-day layoff last year so there is some hope that Dilodovico will have her ready to go in first appearance in 322 days. -Dan Illman

4:03 BEL 6th L’INDISCRET (#2, 15-1) debuted at Gulfstream in March and appeared to need a start while rating in and among horses early before eventually losing position to wind up last coming to the stretch, and then moving clear to pass some horses in the stretch; well-bred filly is eligible to improve quickly with that experience behind her. -Mike Beer

4:10 MTH 8th MARKET BUBBLE (#8, 9-2) makes his return from the layoff for trainer Jorge Duarte Jr., who does well with runners returning from a break; this gelding has speed but can also rate and make one run, and that versatility should give jockey Jose Ferrer some options as he tries to work out a trip in a race with a fairly uncertain race flow. -Kenny Peck

4:15 WO 7th GOLDEN WAVE (#2, 10-1) disappointed on the dirt at Gulfstream before earning his diploma with a 78 Beyer here on the Tapeta three weeks ago. He’s well-regarded by trainer Mike DePaulo, who’s enlisted Kimura after Stein decided to stick with Dotted Line. -Ron Gierkink

4:38 BEL 7th STEELERSFANFORLIFE (#6, 12-1) enters at just 1 for 12 on turf, with that win coming vs. maiden claimers back in 2018 but he has run well more than once since then while frequently getting unlucky and he was in good form when last seen; like his tactical speed in a race where his more lightly-raced rivals still have much to prove. -Mike Beer

5:10 LRL 10th THREES OVER DEUCES (#3, 3-1) may not be the most dependable type with 12 runner-up efforts from 27 lifetime starts, but he started the year with three consecutive 90+ Beyer performances including a solid second behind Grade 1 winner Firenze Fire in the General George. Held up behind a slow pace while in between horses that afternoon, he split rivals in the stretch and was game for second. There is a concern that he might deal with a similar race shape here. -Dan Illman

5:12 MTH 10th FLOWMOTION (#12, 3-1) ships up from Gulfstream with some of the best Beyers in the field and coming off a loss where she had a very legitimate excuse, lacking room at a pivotal point in the race; given clear sailing from her outside post she figures to be running late under Lopez, with trainer Jane Cibelli potentially looking at a very nice day, with several live runners. -Kenny Peck

5:13 BEL 8th VALID POINT (#2, 7-2) still has much to prove - despite being favored in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile when last seen vs. some solid older horses - but he appears to have plenty of potential for a trainer who has been bringing his turf horses back from layoffs ready to roll at this meet; hard to tell what would have happened in that last one but he never came clear in the stretch and prior to that he was winning races easily while appearing to have more to give. -Mike Beer

5:17 WO 9th SPEEDY BOLT (#2, 8-1) parlayed a three-wide stalking trip into a fast win (84 Beyer) vs.NW2 rivals in his season opener. He could double up after tracking all the speed in this N1X. -Ron Gierkink

5:40 LRL 11th MY MOONSHINE (#2, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Dan Illman).

5:48 WO 10th SHIRL’S SPEIGHT (#8, 6-1) is by the hot older sire Speightstown and out of Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Perfect Shirl. The Fipke homebred is a full-brother to a grass winner. -Ron Gierkink

6:22 LAD 6th SCOTTY BOY (#4, 5-2) ran well off the layoff and just likes it here. Connections now want open allowance foes and we can’t blame them. This gelding got a 77 Beyer as a 2YO so he should be faster as a 3YO. There isn’t much pace in this race so he should be forwardly placed. With a race under his belt, the sky is the limit. -Scott Ehlers

6:49 LAD 7th FORGOTTEN (#8, 15-1) won on this sod last summer. He did so at 37-1. His rider that day is his rider today (Del-Cid). His trainer is the same. It was $7,500 claimers last summer and that is the same as today. -Scott Ehlers

6:51 BEL 11th MORETTI (#8, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer).
