DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, July 23, 2022

DRF Staff|Jul 22, 2022
Gulfstream Park dirt racing, 2018
Barbara D. Livingston First post for Gulfstream racing is scheduled for 12:25 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:25 GP 1st Giving a solid chance to LIGHTNING TONES (#5, 8-1), one of a half-dozen first-timers in the opener, when coming unveiled by the ever-capable D. Fawkes following plenty of a.m. schooling; debuting right off at this $25k level versus these other 2yos just might be the correct guesstimation. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:25 GP 3rd Seems like Danny has seen enough of the mdn.-specials and higher-end claimers when trying to get BLUTO'S CANDY (#1, 6-1) thru his maiden condition, so now the gelding finds himself back in for $16k, a level at which he was pretty competitive in late May; can sit a nice stalking trip here under leading jockey Vasquez before moving along. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:26 GP 5th We'll tab THIS RUN'S FOR YOU (#2, 10-1) in this oversubscribed lineup of state-bred 2yo MSWs in what has become typical Saturday fare for the GP summer meet; Stonehedge homebred has a win-early pedigree and gets Vasquez when likely to be sent from his inner post; tote may play a role in how deep he can go. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:52 MTH 5th BIRD'S EYE VIEW (#7, 9-2) was behind some of these same runners in his recent tries but he ran decent races in defeat in all three of those local races, a victim of race flow or traffic in all of them; win percentage is lacking but worth a shot at the right price here, as his best Beyers are good enough and he can run to them given a clean trip and favorable set up. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:24 MTH 6th OUR LUCKY MAN (#4, 6-1) was second best behind Haskell entrant Benevengo in his latest and that was a strong effort, as a slow start seemed to leave him with absolutely no chance yet he rallied with interest to get the place behind that gate-to-wire winner; should be rolling late given an honest pace to chase and a clean getaway. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:56 MTH 7th SOUPER ENERGIZER (#3, 30-1) was off the board in his latest, a sprint, but he galloped out strongly past the wire, as he did three back in another deceptively good effort despite finishing out of the money; stretches out today but he ran well in his route tries last year, and this may even be his best game. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:17 WO 7th HARLAN ESTATE (#5, 9-2) ended a drought when beating second-level allowance types most recently on the main turf. The versatile 4yo could strike again in this N3X on the Tapeta with his confidence on a high. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:15 SAC 2nd AFFECTIONTO AUTISM (#5, 9-2) could not keep pace with Royal 'N Rando in an optional claimer at Pleasanton on July 1, fading through the stretch to finish a well-beaten third. But Affectionto Autism was not beaten far for second in that race and had races in April and May that give the gelding an excellent chance here for a third win in his 11th start. He tends to run from a tracking position, which should suit his outside post. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:25 WO 9th HUSHEMUP (#6, 5-1) led until mid-stretch before fading to fourth when moving out from seven-eighths on the lawn to 1 1/8 miles on the Tapeta in her latest. The lightly-raced 4yo could wire this light maiden special field going 1 1/16 miles. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:28 LAD 4th KASILOF (#8, 6-1) tried seven panels when third off the layoff and won only three back. He drew outside that day. Fast forward to now and this guy goes third off the layoff and draws outside going seven furlongs. He does this all for a high percentage barn in Wilson. Tactical speed comes in handy as there isn't much zip in this race. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:59 WO 10th TEMPEREYA (#6, 20-1) had a rough trip before ending up fifth behind several of her current rivals last time in a nine-furlong tilt on the main turf. She's switching to the inner course for her third start of the season, and could do some damage at a square price with the bug Jones back up. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:22 LAD 6th I'M A SPECIAL STAR (#1, 5-1) puts races together and has good speed. Where is the other zip? Don't bother as there is none. This gelding gets in light which will sharpen his speed that much more. This gelding did win his only local start and we bet he is better now. Wire please. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:49 LAD 7th SHADY GRADY (#2, 4-1) has speed and draws inside main pace foes. He has won on this sod before and we like this inside post. What if this guy is actually better on the green? This barn is 25% on the sod. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:19 SAC 8th BORN TO REIGN (#2, 5-1) recorded consecutive hard-fought wins in May and June, stalking the pace and holding on for narrow victories. Chances are she will be involved in another stretch tussle in this restricted $12,500 claimer. Born to Reign has not started at this class level since September, but her recent wins justify the challenge. Born to Reign was scratched at Pleasanton on June 25 because of illness and has since had three workouts. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:25 MED (Harness) 7thth DOUBLE DECEIVER (#2, 3-1) raced very well in the Yonkers Trot to get second money and now likely needs to stretch out with a big mile if there is any shot of him competing in the Hambletonian. I’m curious to see what this guy can do. – Derick Giwner | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:00 WBS (Harness) 7th LEGION SEELSTER (#5, 4-1) left hard and found the pocket last week then took a shuffle due to a mid-race lead change. He lacked room for most of the lane and he can beat these if he gets a better trip. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
