DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, July 16, 2022

DRF Staff|Jul 15, 2022
Turf racing at Monmouth Park, July 2020
Bill Denver/Equi-Photo One of the issues yet to be resolved with fixed-odds betting is how to handle wagers when a race is switched from turf to dirt resulting in multiple scratches.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:15 MTH 1st HAZARDOUS HUMOR (#7, 6-1) rises again off the Frank Russo claim but despite finishing off the board at this level in her first two career starts she didn't run badly in defeat there, as she had some trouble, and the resulting Beyers were decent; may be able to make the last run given a clean trip. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:00 WO 1st TERRIFIC LADY (#1, 10-1) didn't show much last year at 2 while competing exclusively on the Tapeta but could wake up here with Lasix added for her debut on turf, for which she's strongly bred on both sides of her pedigree. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:11 LRL 2nd Although PHRA PHROM (#3, 10-1) is jumping into the special weight ranks, it doesn't appear as if he's facing a very strong field. Ridden conservatively two back when chasing a quick pace along the rail, he failed to finish with much gusto. Toss out the recent turf debacle, and the barn historically has good numbers moving from grass to dirt. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:42 MTH 4th AMAZING GRACES JOY (#5, 6-1) was off the board in both turf tries to date but she did show good speed in her most recent try on this surface, and there is not a whole lot of pace in this field; eligible to wire this field if he can shake loose in the opening stages under jockey Jose Ferrer, who is at his best when on the lead in grass races. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:34 GP 7th A trio of Boynton bullets strongly suggest MOUNSIEUR COCO (#5, 8-1) is a real runner for the owner-trainer team that brought you the champion Letruska; newbie by the red-hot young sire Bolt d'Oro debuts in the right spot; everyone eager to see if the morning glory translates to the afternoon. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:43 WO 6th TRICK AND TREAT (#6, 12-1) trailed in a four-horse race after breaking a bit slowly at first asking in a five-furlong maiden special won by Collecting Flatter, a contender in the My Dear Stakes. The nicely-bred daughter of Practical Joke deserves a mulligan in this longer maiden special. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:07 MTH 9th IDAKA (#2, 6-1) had some trouble in that last one but she did well to recover enough to rally for the show, a decent effort under the circumstances; overall record isn't very good but if considering only her turf sprint tries she looks much more appealing, and she doesn't meet the deepest of fields in this race. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:37 LAD 5th HE'S GOT THIS (#1, 4-1) tried winners for the first time previously and ran a better than it looks fourth. It was also his first try on the turf. He draws the rail again and horses often improve the second time they do anything. Lozada is 21% for this barn and this gelding might be fourth choice on the tote if all stay in (that's the tough part due to so many scratches at this track). -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:11 LRL 9th Looking for a price with TIC TIC TIC BOOM (#10, 15-1) as she wheels back on short notice after tackling the talented Princess Grace in the Grade 3 Penny at Parx. Solid try two back to finish ahead of a couple of these when chasing odds-on High Opinion. Other than the dull effort in the Dahlia here in her first try following a 229-day layoff, she's run well in all of her races in 2022. Barn is 3 for the last 7 (43%, $2.83 ROI) with horses returning in a week or less. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:16 GP 10th Draw a couple of big red squiggly lines through the G2 Dinner Party and the G2 Belmont Gold Cup, and suddenly NOVO SOL (#9, 6-1) looms a major threat here to his more highly regarded Saffie stablemate, RAMSEY SOLUTION, the presumed favorite in this $55k handicap going two turns on the synth. -Marty McGee | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:20 WO 9th DIXIE MORNING (#5, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:33 LAD 7th WHITEROSE JEWEL (#2, 10-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:51 WO 10th MEDAGLIA MO (#7, 10-1) is by elite sire Medaglia d'Oro, who has good turf stats with his progeny. The $550K weanling purchase is the first foal from a G2 turf stakes winner. She worked fast on the turf training course June 10 and debuts with blinkers and Lasix for leading trainer Casse. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:40 CBY 2nd EDGIE REGGIE (#3, 10-1) ran back to back Beyer tops on this sod last summer so we know he likes it here. What if this colt needed his two return tries at least to some extent? State-bred drops a notch and picks up a top tier jockey all while drawing more inside. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:00 HST 5th MR. QUALITY (#2, 9-2) finished behind COULTERBERRY and Just Make Believe in his latest but it was his first route attempt this year and he might have been a bit too eager as he was rank early. He did settle, though, and he appeared to be full of run on the stretch turn but had nowhere to go. He has decent tactical speed and figures to get a nice trip from a stalking position. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:20 MED (Harness) 4th REBUFF (#2, 5-2) is the favorite to win the Hambletonian in my book and that he was able to blow away the Reynolds field in his first start of the year was certainly amazing. There is no reason to get off this train. – Derick Giwner | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:31 SAC 8th MEDAL ICE (#7, 9-2) pressed the issue before tiring to end up a well-beaten 4th at PLN June 26 but not only was that his first try on dirt it came for over 3 times today's tag. He now has a feel for this footing and the drop may be key. -Michael Hammersly | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:20 YR (Harness) 8th BARON MICHAEL (#5, 7-1) was up against it in his last appearance as he was in against $40,000 claimers and had post eight. He drops a notch tonight, moves inside on the gate, and races for a barn in Dan Morrissey's that can have one ready to fire. – Greg Reinhart | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:25 WBS (Harness) 8th LADYSMITH (#3, 4-1) lacked room late in the mile on 7/5 which likely cost her a placing. She can beat these with slight improvement and more racing room in the lane. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

9:40 CBY 8th MIDNIGHT CURRENT (#4, 6-1) has run a Beyer top in his last three starts and they all came on this sod. Now she goes third off the layoff for a high percentage barn. She draws fine and has a little tactical speed all for new rider in Hernandez. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

10:40 CBY 10th BOSTON WALLY (#7, 12-1) tried two turns and the turf both for the first time last out. He beat two home but did show some speed and hung in there for a while before throwing in the towel. This barn is 24% turf to dirt. This gelding goes second time on this dirt and figures a good price. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
