DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, January 22, 2022

DRF Staff|Jan 21, 2022
Bears Mafia wins the 2021 Kelly Kip Stakes at Aqueduct
Susie Raisher/NYRA Bears Mafia, winning a starter stakes at Aqueduct on March 27, escaped from the fire on Tuesday in Barn 60 and is entered in an allowance race on Friday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:10 LRL 1st IMTHEPRINCE (#8, 5-1) hopped up at the start of circuit debut, raced far back inside, then gave an even finish after angling to the five path turning into the stretch. His lack of early speed is very troublesome, but perhaps the addition of blinkers can get him into the race a bit sooner. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

12:15 TAM 1st ORNERY ANGEL (#5, 7-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Kenny Peck). | Get PPs for this race

12:20 AQU 1st DARN THAT SONG (#2, 6-1) debuted in a solid-looking race vs. open company at Parx last summer as a 2yo and finished a clear third behind Stand Up Comic - now 3 for 3 on dirt and a stakes winner; returned from a layoff last time and matched that debut figure while just missing second behind a dominant winner; player second off the bench. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

12:43 TAM 2nd WINNING MANDATE (#11, 12-1) adds blinkers and Lasix for this, her first start off the layoff, and the nice work two back suggests that the changes agree with her; expecting improvement in her local debut, as she doesn't meet an exceptional field for the class level. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

12:58 GP 3rd STARSHIP MALLOMAR (#2, 6-1) beat similarly priced open claimers on the Tapeta in October, back where he belongs after being over-matched in last pair. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

1:13 TAM 3rd BION MAGIC (#5, 9-2) goes back to seven furlongs, the distance she tries two back, and she ran well enough there to make her a threat today despite once again Lady Jean, who beat her to the wire in that race; she will need to be able to stalk the pace and make one run but if she can do that she could fall into a favorable set up, as there's a fair amount of speed in this field. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race

1:38 LRL 4th RAPIDAMENTE (#6, 6-1) raced midpack while in between horses in final start of 2021, was placed on hold behind foes in upper stretch, split them and finished well with a solid gallop-out. The runner-up from that race returned to win a restricted allowance with a 61 Beyer. Note she was listed as a vet scratch at Penn National on Dec. 14. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

1:48 AQU 4th MOPED DENNIS (#6, 6-1) a firster by a 10% debut sire, from the female family of Test winner Twist Afleet (second dam); dam is a sister to multiple stakes-winning sprinter A New Twist, and she has dropped four winners so far, two of those debut winners; Englehart one of the more reliable first-out trainers on this circuit over the past few years. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

2:18 AQU 5th MISSION TRAIL (#4, 10-1) just missed in her first two career starts, then overcame a poor start to break her maiden when dropped sharply in class last summer; has caught wet tracks in each of her last three starts since dropping in class and she may have run a bit better than it looks last time when outrun early and then having to alter course while rallying in the stretch. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

2:31 GP 6th TAG HER (#3, 10-1) and FOLKLAW a couple of intriguing looking new faces. Former holding own in the a.m. with recent debut winner Shootlikeagirl and stakes placed Credibility and is a kin to multiple G3 winner Souper Escape. Latter by above average debut sire sporting good connections all around. Tabbing board for further clues on both of these. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

2:40 LRL 6th MENDING (#10, 5-1) gets tested at seven-eighths of a mile after taking last two starts going six furlongs. Worked out a nice trip last month pushing a slow pace, took over three furlongs from home and kept on going. The pace will likely be quicker this time around. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

2:48 AQU 6th SUMMER BOURBON (#2, 8-1) won back-to-back races last year, including that September run at this level when closing down a solid pace, then ran well again for $20k when caught up dueling with the speedy Aristocratic and getting the better of that, only to fall to a closer late; rebound chance off the claim for Miceli (6 for his last 23 off the claim in dirt sprints, 26%, $2.76 ROI). -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

3:05 GP 7th WAKE SURF (#7, 6-1) a steadily improving sort exiting solid maiden win and with perhaps a bit of a pace edge in this spot. Shaky call in well matched field. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

3:11 LRL 7th RAN CHAR (#3, 10-1) was placed on a hard chase behind a loose pacesetter, eventually got the better of that horse, but couldn't hold off the rallying winner over closer-friendly track 27 days ago. The third-place finisher from that heat returned to run third in an entry-level allowance at Penn National with a 62 Beyer. He has the tactical speed to find forward position. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

3:37 GP 8th BLAMETHECHAMPAGNE (#2, 10-1) knocking on door with this kind and like the fact she's already had a couple of races at this distance on her resueme'. Ready to graduate with any help up front. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race

4:46 OP 8th WILDWOOD'S BEAUTY (#8, 5-1) is appealing as a four-time stakes winner who has earned more than $600K. She also defeated some of these last out in an allowance prep in which she set the pace over a laboring track and prevailed - in her first start since April. The outside draw here might give Arrieta options. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race

4:52 TAM 10th DAWN (#9, 4-1) was only able to get 5th as the favorite in her local debut but that was a much better effort than her finish would indicate, as she was away slowly and she was moving well late after racing behind mild splits; looking for her to run them all down in the lane given a clean getaway and an honest pace up front. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race
