DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, February 13, 2021

DRF Staff|Feb 12, 2021
Colonel Liam (left) wins the 2021 Pegasus World Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park
Barbara D. Livingston Colonel Liam (left) wins the Pegasus World Cup Turf on Saturday. His next major target is the Old Forester Turf Classic on May 1 at Churchill Downs.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:19 TAM 1st SMART WARRIOR (#4, 8-1) has been running well of late, even in his latest, when he was off the board going six furlongs, as he showed some late interest; last couple of Beyers fit and he can make the last run with the right set up and trip, with today’s extra distance being the main concern. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:18 TAM 3rd THE GODDESS LYSSA (#4, 4-1) couldn’t have won that optional claimer with much more ease, and though she weakened when behind HEIRESSALL two back she actually ran quite well there, as she battled through rapid early fractions and weakened only in the late stages; looms the main speed in this Minaret Stakes and she certainly has license to steal it. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:05 GP 5th OKALANI (#7, 15-1) has shown some improved speed in a.m. with addition of blinkers. Switches to dirt, drops another notch, might prove upset threat over likely favorite and logical choice PEACHY QUEEN. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:46 TAM 6th BIG TALL DAWG (#4, 6-1) impressed in defeat in that last one, making a mid-race run at the pacesetters and actually getting the lead down the backstretch and into the lane, only to falter late; that strong effort came on the heels of a deceptively good try in his prior start, and if he can retain his form and run back to that last one he’s going to be dangerous. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:55 AQU 5th DANEBURY (#6, 12-1) has the back class to factor strongly in this spot and he may have gotten just what he needed from that last one, which appeared to be a prep over a sprint distance with a bar shoe on; second off the layoff with speed as one of many contenders on this race. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:24 AQU 6th KING MOONRACER (#5, 6-1) is by a top NY site and is a brother to two winners from this dam, including full-sibling Mabel Island, who is 4 for 8 over fast dirt so far and has speed; Weaver vastly underrated with his first time starters sprinting on dirt - 17 for his last 71, 24%, $3.61 ROI - and he has been effective when sending them out to debut over this difficult distance - 4 for 16 over seven furlongs in that sample, 25%, $8.53 ROI. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:41 GP 8th WHISPERING PINES (#4, 8-1) overcame some adversity, breaking through gate right before start, and a bit of a troubled trip to win maiden in local debut and continues to train forwardly for stretch back to a mile. Might offer a little value here. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:47 TAM 8th GEORGIA PINES (#8, 20-1) returns to Tampa after a couple of tries at Gulfstream against richer and though he was off the board in both of those races he earned representative in each; he faced $25,000 maiden claimers here three back and ran a solid race for the show, rallying nicely late and galloping out well past the wire. -Kenny Peck | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:55 AQU 7th FREUDIAN SIP (#2, 8-1) hasn’t been seen since October, where he was returning from a longer layoff against better, and failed to factor before going right back to the sidelines; dropping for this but this is likely the right kind of race for a horse whose last two wins came for $16k; ran better than it looks in each of his first two starts off the claim for Rice and might just be back in the right spot, assuming he is ready off the bench. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:55 AQU 9th DANEGELD (#10, 10-1) fought his way to a stretch lead in the slow and just missed in a slow race on debut, then improved in his next two starts - one of those behind a dominant winner in Tapizearance, and the next when bumped at the start before rallying late into a wire-to-wire winner; back from the layoff dropping back down for a hot barn. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
