DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, April 2, 2022

DRF Staff|Apr 01, 2022
Dirt racing at Oaklawn Park, December 2021
Coady Photography Oaklawn Park opened its current meet on Dec. 4, the earliest opening in track history.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:40 LRL 1st I'M NOT SLOW (#2, 6-1) takes a significant class hike after handling bottom maiden claimers, but think it's a good sign that high-percentage Gonzalez barn (3 for the last 8, 38%, $3.22 ROI with 3-year-old last-out maiden winners with Lasix and blinkers on dirt) wheels back in less than a week. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

12:57 GP 4th HALL OF DREAMS (#8, 5-1) has been freshened since solid second place effort in Woodbine finale when run down late by stable mate Golden Glider despite being caught wide both terms, the latter finishing 4th last out in Tampa Bay Derby. Might offer some value here. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:06 TAM 3rd OUTSTANDING ISLAND (#8, 6-1) is by a 1 for 3 debut turf sire (2 for 13 overall). His dam went 22-4-2-1 on the green for 93K. Of five sibs to try the grass, two won with another hitting the board. We liked this gelding's debut as it was nice and even. This gelding should improve going two turns on the turf and the price will entice. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:20 AQU 1st STRAPPED (#3, 7-2) broke slowly and raced greenly while outrun early in his sprint debut, from which one of the also-rans has already returned to break his maiden with a 95 Beyer; bred to improve with distance and experience; stretches right out with blinkers on. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:06 TAM 5th FORTUNATE FRIENDS (#7, 8-1) likes this distance as he has never missed the board in an elongated sprint. You can't argue with recent confidence boost. New barn is 2 for 2 off the claim. This gelding draws best but he will have to break in a new jockey. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:27 GP 7th TRAFFIC SONG (#1, 7-2) continues to improve, might handle step up to stakes company in current form. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:36 TAM 6th WATER WITCH (#9, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:41 LRL 5th PATRIOTIC PARTY (#2, 8-1) makes carrer debut for Dilodovico barn that scored with favored first-time starter Noble Bid on March 13. March 20 workout matches up with barn's 4-year-old Chambo (finished fourth in $12,500 "non-three" with 59 Beyer on March 25). Perhaps they breezed in company. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:01 GP 8th WISH YOU WELL (#4, 12-1) brought $550K in the paddock here a year ago at the 2yo sales and appears to be working forwardly for debut. Kin to G3 winner Chanteline could be a quick one. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:12 LRL 6th SHE'S GOT GAME (#7, 9-2) put it all together when stretched back out to a route at Parx. Tracked the pace from the pocket, made a three-wide bid to the lead on the second turn and drew away in the stretch. Ness is 3 for the last 9 (33%, $5.02 ROI) with 3-year-old last-out maiden winners on dirt (Lasix, no blinkers). Should get plenty of pace to attack in the stretch. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:39 TAM 10th HERECOMESTHEHAMMER (#3, 6-1) has some speed and draws inside. Race flow is fine and there are no world beaters at this level. High percentage barn is 25% on the dirt and 26% with their claimers. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:40 AQU 7th BANYAN BREEZE (#8, 6-1) got in way too tough when shipped in here two back while in good form, then had trouble at the start and got wired in a tame performance on the drop last time; switches to a hot barn with the back races to factor here and doesn't need the lead to be effective. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:00 OP 8th WOBBERJOD (#7, 9-2) has shown so much fight this meet at Oaklawn, where he is 3-for-4. His lone loss came by a head. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:36 SA 4th This $10k claiming sprint for fillies and mares is the right spot to take a shot at a price with DISCERNMENT (#7, 4-1). A two-turn mile was out of reach both recent starts; she is most effective in sprints and has gas to be forwardly placed. That assumes her speed was not dulled racing a mile both recent. Upset chance with an up-front trip. -Brad Free | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:50 AQU 9th TONALISTIC (#3, 12-1) debuted early last year over a sloppy track at Delaware and looked like he needed that experience while chasing wide and getting tired in the stretch; threat at a fair price if ready off the bench. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:16 OP 10th DREAM LITH (#1, 8-1) is proven class as a Grade 2 winner and she might get an ideal setup in the Fantasy, as there appears to be a nice amount of speed in the race. Her defining win came in the Golden Rod, at this mile and a sixteenth distance at Churchill. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:20 WBS (Harness) 2nd GOODGOLLYMISSMOLLY (#9, 3-1) has hit her best stride in her past two starts and if she can trot another 1:55 mile here, her rivals will be racing for 2nd. – Garnet Barnsdale | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:35 OP 12th BARBER ROAD (#3, 8-1) gets the nod in a competitive renewal of the Arkansas Derby in large part because of his consistent performances throughout the 3-year-old series at Oaklawn. He's navigated his way through a good deal of traffic in those races, which have drawn fields of 13, 12, and 11 runners. The nine-horse gate this time around would seem to serve closer's cause. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:10 OP 13th NAVY SEAL (#5, 10-1) is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Weast Hill ($499K). -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

10:50 MED (Harness) 12th When last seen at The Meadowlands LIKE CLOCKWORK (#6, 3-1) was racing three classes higher and all of his recent starts have been from outside posts on half-mile tracks. This looks like an ideal spot for a quick form reversal. – Derick Giwner | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
