DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Monday, July 4, 2022

DRF Staff|Jul 03, 2022
Turf racing at Monmouth Park, July 2020
Bill Denver/Equi-Photo One of the issues yet to be resolved with fixed-odds betting is how to handle wagers when a race is switched from turf to dirt resulting in multiple scratches.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:32 BEL 2nd FOOLISH GHOST (#2, 4-1) has questions to answer as he starts back from a layoff to make his 7yo debut after seeing his form tail off late last year, and does so after being listed as a vet scratch a couple of times; capable of a race that would make him way too much for this field, especially if he returns with his speed intact; can’t have a lot of faith, but expecting him to break running. – Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race

1:49 LRL 3rd SAMUI SUNSET (#1, 6-1) (1,217 lbs. on June 24) seeks third straight after very game score in first start off the Sanchez-Salomon claim. He received a very nice setup from off the pace that day, but has more tactical speed than some of the deep closers in this lineup. – Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race

2:11 MTH 5th JUST JEREMY (#2, 8-1) gets a change of pace with the switch to the turf bet retains his early speed. We like this inside post that isn’t the rail. This gelding has some prior turf efforts that are decent and they all came against special weights. His most recent was a Beyer top so maybe, now is the best time to return him to the green. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

3:09 MTH 7th PASS AND STOW (#7, 3-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race

4:06 BEL 7th COMEDY TOWN (#1, 20-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get PPs for this race

4:07 MTH 9th DREAM ASTRAY (#2, 12-1) ran OK in his debut and then was buried on the rail in his second start. His return try was promising and he finally gets off the rail. Class jump helps the price. – Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race

7:30 LRC 8th CANDY CARAMEL (#7, 4-1), a 2yo filly first-time starter, debuts with fast works for Peter Miller, who entered three in this race. Sired by Candy Ride, produced by a mare who won first time out, ‘CARAMEL looks ready to fire. – Brad Free | Get PPs for this race
