DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, October 22, 2021

DRF Staff|Oct 21, 2021
Max Player (left) wins the 2021 Suburban Stakes at Belmont Park
Barbara D. Livingston Max Player (left) beats Mystic Guide in the Suburban. He will need a repeat of that effort in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:00 KEE 1st CALL OF HONOR (#6, 10-1) gets a big TimeformUS early pace figure and while not making the lead did show speed in both the dirt route and turf route, two starts to begin career. Poor performances both, but here he gets the first drop into maiden claiming, has posted lively works over the KEE track, and facing easier competition has a chance to get brave on the lead at a price. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:16 LRL 2nd Looking for a price in this wide-open marathon and believe that FED UP FIRED UP (#9, 10-1), a daughter of Breeders' Cup Turf winner English Channel, will appreciate getting out to 1 1/2 miles. A two-time winner at nine furlongs, the mare beat males two starts back and simply fell too far behind going a mile here 15 days ago. Broke a beat slow, saved ground at the back, altered course widest in upper stretch and finished evenly in a race that was dominated throughout by the top-two finishers. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:54 GP 3rd URANIUM (#8, 6-1) dueled hard, was easily second brest behind runaway winner in promising bow, well drawn outside at second asking in a very intriguing looking liineup. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:13 BEL 4th LOST IN ROME (#5, 9-2) was claimed out of a win for $25k late last year and his form has improved since then while winning twice more and earning several figures that are going to make him competitive here as he finally drops back down in class; cutting a positive after getting in vs. much tougher going longer when last seen. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:36 KEE 4th SONIC CITY (#3, 10-1) away nearly 14 months since a debut run on turf at Ellis Park, and it's interesting to me that connections return him for a very high tag while moving to dirt. Regarding the surface switch, the work pattern does hold some appeal, and he looked in her debut like he wanted to be a racehorse passing several late in lone start. Trainer McPeek wholly capable with these long-layoff types and with the chance of a strong, contested pace, don't mind trying something likely to be running late. -Marcus Hersh | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:00 GP 5th GLOBAL EMPIRE (#8, 15-1) new blinkered and working well for return from long layoff. Expense and well bred sort never reached expectations but should prove good fit for this tag. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:33 LRL 6th GREAT IDEA (#4, 6-1) didn't have the easiest situation in first start against winners. Facing favored gate-to-wire winner Arrio, he raced in between horses for the first half-mile, wound up last on the rail entering the far turn, was hemmed in when attempting to get outside in upper stretch and gave a solid finish with a nice gallop-out after altering course back to the fence. With his running style, he needs a bit of pace and race luck. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:02 GP 7th POIEMA (#2, 5-1) flashed big speed against open company over the Tapeta which was not kind to front running types at the time. Switches to main, slips in with state breds, may not stop despite stretching out a bit in distance at second asking. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:34 GP 8th CRUMB BUN (#5, 9-2) makes first start off the claim for current connections. Just missed despite doing all the dirty work on front end with this same caliber two back. Might return quick dividends. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:52 BEL 9th ARZAK (#6, 8-1) overcame a bump at the start to score narrowly in the Tom Ridge two back with a big 90 Beyer, but he could not overcome trouble at the start in the Allied Forces last time, though he ran better than it may appear in that race while gaining all the way after a conservative early ride; can handle the added ground and might be a lot better than he looks on paper. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:23 BEL 10th VIBE SETTER (#1, 12-1) is by an underrated sire in Congrats (10% with 2yo first time starters) and a half to a winner from the female family of the top NY-bred dirt horse Pat On the Back; breezing right along for an excellent trainer and pulls Rosario for his debut. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:11 WO 4th SOCIETY JOE (#10, 12-1) made a premature wide bid from the rear of the field on the backstretch to challenge for the lead before fading late to fourth when dropping to this bottom NW2 level Oct. 3. Bridgmohan takes over and is 1 for 3 at the meet for Elder. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:46 WO 5th AMBERWOOD (#7, 4-1) weakened to sixth behind two next-out winners after a three-wide trip in a slow-paced $10K seller the last time he saw action Sept. 3. He should take some beating in this much easier $5K route for NW3 or non-winners this year. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:07 RP 1st SALLY G (#3, 9-2) moves back to a mile and her last two wins on form came at the trip. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:20 WO 8th BEST AND FINAL (#8, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Ron Gierkink). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

10:27 RP 6th HOLY CREED (#6, 5-1) was right there against similar last out in another strong performance over the local lawn this meet at Remington. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
