DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, October 13, 2023

DRF Staff|Oct 12, 2023
Keeneland fall meet dirt racing 2019
Coady Photography First post for Keeneland racing is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Friday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:00 KEE 1st There's speed aplenty entered here, and ONEPARTICULRHARBOR (#6, 15-1), who has none, gets to ply his grinding route style over a distance as far as 1 1/8 miles for the first time. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:08 BAQ 2nd REAGAN'S FLAME (#9, 8-1) is by an underrated turf sire (so far) and is out of a half-sister to a multiple graded stakes winner on the grass; appeared to be going easy when posting a 10.1 breeze in April, prior to selling for $185k; DeVaux 3 for her last 7 with 2yo first-time starters sprinting on turf, with a $4.07 ROI. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:32 KEE 2nd SPIN THE BOULEVARD (#10, 15-1), well-drawn on the outside, is fit and aggressively spotted debuting for a $50K tag. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:50 GP 3rd DOWNTON TABBY (#1, 12-1) dons shades, returns to a surface she handled extremely well here last winter. Looks like controlling speed if away clean from the rail. -Mike Welsch | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:04 KEE 3rd IFIHADACHANCE (#3, 12-1), unless she has just lost it, has a better race in her than her last two, and this trainer, who knows his claiming horses, wouldn't send her from Parx to a starter-allowance if he thought she'd lost it. Winless in four starts at it but still think 7f a good trip for this mare. Doubt she's as high a price as the morning line. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:20 GP 4th LIGHTING CLOUDS (#2, 6-1) switches to synthetic, shortens up in distance, training well over the surface. Might stand some catching if getting loose from key contenders PRAISEWORTHY and GALIPAN. -Mike Welsch | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:44 BAQ 5th FRONT MAN's (#9, 15-1) last two efforts aren't close to his best, though he did return from the layoff with two races that will make him very competitive vs. this field; trips are very important to him but he fits well here if he can get one, and he is going to be a price. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:16 BAQ 6th MIDNIGHT COUNCIL (#9, 6-1) went favored in his career debut at Monmouth last month but he looked very green while getting far back outrun early in that race and never really had a chance to be effective, though he did put in a solid run through the stretch; appeared to really need that start and might be able to improve quickly for top connections. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:32 LRL 7th SMART WITH HEART (#5, 8-1) appears to have been purchased privately since her debut. Broke sharp in that Delaware heat, set a three-ply pace from the rail, then stayed on gamely to finish behind two experienced runners (the runner-up returned to place in a restricted allowance there with a 53 Beyer). Capable new barn snapped an 0-50 slump at Aqueduct on Sunday, and their filly should get forward from the get-go. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:40 KEE 6th CODE RUNNER (#1, 15-1) missed most of 2022, but his $40K claiming dirt route performance at Pimlico in May made him look roughly like the same horse who won for a $32K tag during KEE's fall 2021 meet. The three races after that - 1 1/2 mile stakes race and a pair of turf tries -- are easily forgivable. Could see a favorable trip unfolding. -Marcus Hersh | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:45 GP 7th SOY UNA DAMA (#7, 15-1) given plenty of time out after being run into the ground in U.S. bow. Looked sharp over this surface prepping for Tapeta bow. Looks best of the three Sanchez's in the lineup off their form back home in Chile. Perhaps a sleeper in very wide open mix. -Mike Welsch | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:04 LRL 8th GET THE CANDY (#6, 6-1) set the pace inside 5-1 shot Fontanafredda (finished last) through a reasonable opening quarter of 22.71, but the pace didn't hold up for those two in a race won by rail-skimming favored tracker Kerry. She makes her circuit debut in the third start following a short layoff for barn that went 4 for the last 13 (31%, $3.57 ROI) with turf horses in Maryland, and has the speed to get close to the pace. -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:15 GP 8th Note conditions of this race and it couldn't have been written any more perfect for SANDPIPER MEMORIES (#9, 8-1) whose last win came just 4 days before the cut off date for this one. Recent form has been decent vs. much better around two turns. Should come flying late with enough help up front on turn back to this distance. -Mike Welsch | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:33 WO 7th INVENTING (#5, 5-1) let stablemate Strega ride a golden rail to victory on a slow pace last out when she was a stalking fourth behind Forever Dixie, who came back to romp in the Ontario Damsel Stakes with an 88 Beyer. She could lead all the way this time or track sprinter Beyond Mybudget early before going in for the kill. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:54 BAQ 9th HIGHLAND LORD (#2, 8-1) raced up close to an experienced winner before getting a bit tired in the stretch in the debut back in January going longer; well-bred 3yo is eligible to do a lot better as he starts back going short. -Mike Beer | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:06 WO 8th ABSOLUTE JEWEL (#5, 15-1) seemed headed for victory on the far turn two weeks ago before running up behind rivals and clipping heels and falling. This inner turf tilt against the boys is tougher, but she could make some noise as a longshot with apprentice Bynoe subbing for the sidelined Walcott. -Ron Gierkink | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:10 LRL 10th RENNIE (#6, 6-1) ran pretty well the last time he tried this course and distance last fall. Taken in hand to track the pace from in between horses, he raced in and among rivals on the turn, was forced inward a bit in upper stretch, then finished evenly. Ran four times in quick succession during the Colonial meet, and might benefit from a bit of a breather since his most recent outing, a race that produced next-out 80-Beyer winner Code Name ($45,000 maiden claimer here on 10/1). -Dan Illman | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:53 MED 3rd TWO MINUTES APART (#5, 5-1) made his first start for a tag in his latest and it was an encouraging try, as he weakened only late after pressing the pace from the start; he doesn't necessarily need the lead but given the relative lack of pace in this field he and DOOQ could control the issue from the start. -Kenny Peck | Bet this race with DRF Bets

8:35 RP 2nd MISS YOU NO MORE (#6, 5-1) is a Colorado-bred who moves into the maiden ranks after debuting against winners back home at Arapahoe. She ran a fine second and for the effort earned what ranks as this field's best last-race Beyer Speed Figure. -Mary Rampellini | Bet this race with DRF Bets
