DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, May 14, 2021

DRF Staff|May 13, 2021
Pimlico racing
Debra A. Roma Pimlico plans to close the north end of the grandstand due to structural issues.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

11:30 PIM 1st MOKHEEF (#10, 8-1) showed his affinity for this course by winning here in 2019 and now races "Lasix On" for his seasonal debut with bullet workouts on display. Not a bad effort against solid "two-other-than" types last summer. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:02 BEL 3rd JOKER ON JACK (#3, 4-1) returned to turf at Keeneland last month for the first time since he was a 2yo and ran deceptively well after being rated back in that was dominated by a stablemate on a loose lead; has to get the seven but can stay closer this time and may be better than he looks. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:05 PIM 6th CHARGE TO VICTORY (#5, 6-1) chased favored lone pacesetter Nottoway when a game second at Laurel and he ran pretty well over this surface last fall. Although his very best races have occurred when on the lead, think he can rate and finish successfully, and he has the tactical speed to sit just off the expected solid pace. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:36 PIM 7th SMALL HOPE (#11, 12-1) raced in good form over the winter at Gulfstream. Beat conditioned claimers three back, then ran third behind Churn N Burn (returned to win the Grade 2 Pan American with a 101 Beyer) and Shamrocket (came back to finish second in the Turf Classic at Tampa Bay with an 87 Beyer before finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Man o' War with a 95). -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:57 GP 5th REAGAN'S HEART (#9, 10-1) exploded down the stretch turning in career best performance to beat similar last time. Just a question of whether he can repeat the effort in another race that figures to tie up late if Earth and Henry's World do their thing up front. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:27 GP 6th KURT'S A KEEPER (#7, 8-1) showed some improvement last time while getting a bit of a right-hand beating much of the way. Switches pilots, well posted outside, may be bit of a sleeper making third start of his form cycle. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:34 BEL 6th CHIEF KNOW IT ALL (#2, 10-1) hasn't been competitive in his first three starts off the claim for this trainer, but it could be argued that he was not in the right spot in any of those races; back to the level of the claim for this with races at or near claiming price four and five starts back that would make him tough in here. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:35 LS 1st TOAH (#7, 6-1) gets the nod in the opener after popping a career-high Beyer Speed Figure in his turf debut last out at Lone Star Park. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:30 GP 8th SUCCESSFUL ONE (#7, 15-1) switches to grass for third start of his career and with the speed to perhaps lead these a merry chase if he takes to the surface. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:06 GP 9th SWEET BABY RAELYNN (#6, 8-1) held own with likes of Brad Cox trained, 6/5 Patty H despite wire trip last time. Should catch legit pace to run at with FOOLISH HEART and ADIOS TRIPPI expected to bang it out up front. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:38 GP 10th GRAN MALBEC (#10, 3-1) has gone a long time between win photos but knocking on the door now. Was run down late by 70-1 Reagan's Heart while clearly best of others for same tag last time. -Mike Welsch | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

6:25 PIM 14th Several angles for FRED'S SHEILA (#7, 6-1) as she switches surfaces and stretches out in distance for second start following a 231-day layoff. A victim of tough trips in both dirt sprints, she is a half-sister to a turf winner by a young sire that is 2 for 9 (29%) with first-grass performers. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

7:19 LS 9th The race BLACKROCK CASTLE (#3, 5-1) was second in last time has become a key one. The winner came back in his next start to account for an N1X at LS with a Beyer of 80; the fourth-place finisher, Heliochrome, a $20K maiden claimer at LS, with a Beyer of 64; and the ninth-place finisher, Mega Bond, a maiden allowance at WRD, with a Beyer of 68. -Mary Rampellini | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets
