DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Friday, March 1, 2024

DRF Staff|Feb 29, 2024
Gulfstream Park dirt racing, 2018
Barbara D. Livingston First post for Gulfstream racing is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET on Friday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:20 TAM 1st SEMINOLE AUSTIN (#1, 8-1) was far back and never a threat in his Tampa bow but that race has all the makings of a prep, and he did move forward in the second start of his career when he stretched out off a sprint; meets a typical field for the class level and may be worth a shot at the right price. -Kenny Peck

1:20 AQU 1st ACCOUNT RECEIVABLE (#5, 6-1) had some speed in the MSW debut but wound up racing very greenly once getting behind horses early on and was never in a comfortable rhythm thereafter; moves outside and adds blinkers while dropping into a better spot for the second start. -Mike Beer

1:24 LRL 3rd BANDITSGOLDENCHILD (#8, 10-1) is a half-brother to multiple stakes-winning dirt sprinter Anna's Bandit (won debut; 89 dirt Beyer top) and one other debut winner out of stakes-winning dirt sprinter Onearmedbandit (won first four starts; 91 dirt Beyer). The dam is a full sister to stakes-placed turf sprinter Valin Time (won debut on dirt; 71 turf Beyer). -Dan Illman

1:50 AQU 2nd HONORARY DEGREE (#4, 4-1) was convincing in that win two back while keeping up close to a solid pace before taking charge into the stretch; got a break after that victory and pulled a wide trip over a wet track last time; looks like a nice fit shipping in to make the NY debut for $10k and his versatile running style gives him an added edge. -Mike Beer

1:55 TAM 4th PERFORMANCEANXIETY (#7, 12-1) failed to threaten in either of her last two but she was perhaps too close to the pace in that last one and seven furlongs may have been too far for her two back; class drop and a better set up may be just what she needs. -Kenny Peck

2:10 GP 3rd GOOD BRIGHT FLAMES (#5, 15-1) over-matched in every start since impressive maiden tally for more than twice this tag over the Tapeta back in August. Beaten a neck by Sadie the Goat over Tampa main, the second straight tally for that one who earned diploma right here under a $35K claiming tag in her previous try. -Mike Welsch

4:03 TAM 8th STREET GLIDE (#10, 8-1) closed with interest in that last one, when 2nd against a step lesser, and though he rises in class for this he figures to be well set up, as there are several speeds to his inside; draws wide but has the tactical speed to stay close from the start. -Kenny Peck

4:37 GP 8th HIGH LIMIT ROOM (#4, 8-1) chased speedy winner, faded late in local bow now switches back to preferred surface and love the fact Irad stays. May be good enough to spring the upset over likely favorite CAROTARI who returns to allowance ranks after getting hung wide throughout, failing again as public's choice in the Gulfstream Turf Sprint. -Mike Welsch

4:50 OP 7th ABSOLUTE COURAGE (#5, 9-2) caught a wet track last out and might be best-served if the strip is fast as he's had the bulk of his success on fast tracks. -Mary Rampellini

5:22 OP 8th DEMI (#7, 6-1) cuts back to one turn and both of her wins have come at this six furlong trip. -Mary Rampellini

6:59 SA 8th MASTERMIND (#4, 4-1) drops to $10k claiming and returns to preferred dirt footing after being recently overmatched on turf against better. Both career wins were on dirt, his front-running style has been effective this meet at a mile on dirt. -Brad Free

7:14 GG 6th There are several in this field of eight $25,000 claimers with chances to win. Race tactics may favor WAR GAMES (#8, 8-1), who breaks from the outside and has ample speed to move clear and save ground. This is the second start following a layoff of more than nine months for War Games, who finished fourth in a $32,000 claimer on Feb. 10 after setting a torrid early pace before fading. He was part of a duel in that field, and may not face the same pressure on Friday. -Steve Andersen
