DRF Staff|Jun 18, 2020
Jais's Solitude (purple silks) was disqualified to sixth in the Bald Eagle Derby at Laurel Park
Jim Duley/Maryland Jockey Club Jais's Solitude (purple silks) drops from stakes competition for Sunday's feature race at Tampa Bay Downs.

With most other North American sports being shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, we hope the sport of horse racing can entertain you during these trying times. Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

1:02 GP 3rd FIRST NAVY ADMIRAL (#4, 7-2) split the field in his debut last out and note the third-place finisher from the race came back in his next start to win a maiden special weight at Gulfstream. As for FIRST NAVY ADMIRAL, he is by a stallion who is getting 17 percent 2-year-old winners. -Mary Rampellini

1:15 BEL 1st BUSTIN BIEBER (#4, 20-1) is by top juvenile first-out sire Bustin Stones (wins with 22% of his 2yo debut runners) from a dam who won her debut by over 17 lengths in the slop before going on to win six more races on the grass, and this colt is a full-brother to 2yo debut winner R Precious Stones; will take his win-early pedigree in race full of first time starters. -Mike Beer

1:45 LRL 3rd BOBBY’S GOLDENGIRL (#4, 4-1) pushed the pace in recent one-mile effort at Churchill Downs, took over before the quarter pole and tried hard for third in a race where the one-two finishers rallied from eleventh and twelfth, respectively. Fifth-place runner from that heat returned to place on turf with a 68 Beyer. Think she has enough speed to stay within range despite cutting back to a sprint for the first time and her dam was a stakes-winner sprinting on dirt. -Dan Illman

2:18 LRL 4th CONQUESTHARDCHERRY (#4, 5-1) was going well before the break and might have needed her run here 18 days ago. Seemed a bit sluggish leaving the gate, split horses entering the turn, swung 4 to 5 wide turning into the stretch and gave an even finish. Don’t mind her getting back out to six furlongs here, especially given the likelihood of a good pace in front of her. -Dan Illman

2:31 WO 4th BENS LAST CALL (#1, 9-2) closed for second behind a next-out winner the only time he raced on the inner turf going 1 1/16 miles in the fall. He could be along in time in this 7 1/2-furlong tilt if there’s a contested pace. -Ron Gierkink

3:05 WO 5th FINAL ECLIPSE #7, 3-1) is by the good 14% debut sire Silent Name. His stakes-placed dam produced six winners, most notably turf stakes winner Niigon’s Eclipse. His trainer won at a 12% clip with first-timers during the past five years ($2.27 ROI). -Ron Gierkink

3:09 GP 7th R UNCLE ERIC (#5, 3-1) showed excellent speed in his career debut last out and looks like the one these will have to catch. The start came against steeper, and like that he was an odds on favorite. -Mary Rampellini

3:27 BEL 5th MORALITY CLAUSE (#6, 8-1) debuted here last May and came up short at the end after encountering trouble at the start and losing position, then had similar trouble in her second start when jammed up behind a slow pace and settling for second-best; makes her 3yo debut on the drop for a good layoff trainer. -Mike Beer

3:41 GP 8th POSEIDON’S PASSION (#9, 4-1) is appealing as a three-time winner facing some less-experienced rivals. She also might benefit if the turf is firm after catching “good” ground for the first time last out. -Mary Rampellini

4:00 SA 1st EASTERN OCEAN (#3, 7-2) is the one to beat. He finished a creditable second last out in a turf mile despite fighting with his rider much of the trip. Hard-held inside, shuffled on the far turn, he rallied late along the rail to miss by less than a length. The horse that beat him returned to finish third in a stakes race. -Brad Free

4:06 LRL 7th ROUGH SEA (#8, 8-1) showed no rust in return from 251-day layoff when upsetting entry-level allowance, has won three of his last four starts and boasts winning experience at this one-turn mile. Despite being bumped at the start last time, he worked out a good trip saving ground until the turn, then split horses on the bend before coming inside the favored pacesetter turning for home. He kicked on nicely in the final furlong to win comfortably and shows a quick half-mile drill 12 days ago for barn that is 6 for 22 (27%, $3.24 ROI) over the past two years with older last-out winners. -Dan Illman

4:13 GP 9th APACHE BRAVE (#11, 7-2) caught good turf last time and might be better served with firm ground, the footing of his best recent turf races. He also removes blinkers here after adding them for his most recent start. -Mary Rampellini

4:29 SA 2nd PASITO (#5, 3-1) drops to the rock-bottom N2L claiming level after a tough trip vs. better; the mile turf race she exits produced two next-out winners. PASITO won a maiden-claiming dirt mile two back that probably would be fast enough. This race originally was scheduled for six and a half furlongs, but changed to seven furlongs presumably to attract sufficient entrants. -Brad Free

4:32 BEL 7th FETCHING (#1, 10-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer).

5:04 BEL 8th SUMMER BOURBON (#6, 9-2) worked out a clean trip but couldn’t make a late impact behind front-running Won and Done off the layoff; may be set for better in his second start back with faster races to get to and that race should have him sharp as he catches most of these off the bench. -Mike Beer

5:29 SA 4th First-time starter BIG FISH (#5, 4-1) debuts with a solid workout pattern and a winearly pedigree for a trainer that does well with juvenile first-time starters. BIG FISH entered a similar Cal-bred maiden race June 5, but scratched from that race, which was won by well-touted first-time starter Bolden. BIG FISH has worked well. He reportedly showed speed May 13, worked in company with older multiple winner Wild Bean on May 20, and finished strongly June 10 (work viewed on XBTV.com). He was sired by Mr. Big, whose juvenile progeny are 4-for-13 first out. Finally, trainer David Hofmans is 4-for-15 with debut juveniles the past five years. Looks like a “go.” -Brad Free

7:30 SA 8th HOOP DREAM (#1, 5-1) blew the start in a race like this here May 16 but kept to his task well to split the field. That was also his first start after a layoff. He can benefit from that outing and today’s added furlong. – Michael Hammersly
